Register to read the introduction… The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association provided the names of all potential participants for this study to the conductors. Therefore, 1,000 surveys were mailed out the to specific Speech-Language Pathologists, who work in public schools, across the country. With only a 50% response, only about 47.5% of the surveys were used to obtain the most valid data. The participants were given a list of scenarios that children with a stutter are faced with at school, and the SLPs, Speech-Language Pathologist, must determine the best, suitable response to each bullying act. Along with this part of the survey, SLPs were also asked to report their perception of the seriousness of the issue and their likelihood of intervention for each …show more content…
The first question to be recorded in the results was about the seriousness of the scenario of bullying. Overall, the SLPs recorded that physical bullying is more serious than verbal and relational bullying. When looking at physical bullying with imitation of a stutter and without, the average seriousness that was recorded was a 4.7 (with stuttering) and a 4.6 (without stuttering) on a scale of 1-5. For verbal bullying, the average seriousness with stuttering was a 3.6, and the average without stuttering was 3.3. Lastly, the average seriousness for relational bullying with a stutter was a 1.9, and the average without a stutter was a 1.8. In all of these situations, SLPs perceived that when a bully mocks a stutter, the scenario is more serious than when there is no mockery. Likewise, SLPs recorded how likely they would intervene a situation with the particular scenario stated. All of these recordings were rated on the scale of 1-5. Similar to the previously stated results, physical bullying was also ranked higher than verbal and relational bullying for this question. Physical bullying that mentioned stuttering recorded an average at 4.6 and without the mention of stuttering was at 4.5. The average likelihood of an intervention by an SLP for verbal

    There are several different and simple solutions to help spread awareness about bullying and try to prevent it from happening. An example would be the Olweus Anti-Bullying Prevention Program, an anti-bullying program developed by Clemson University, and their collaboration with LOGAN, an organization which caters to the needs of adults and children with disabilities (Chappell, 2015).
