Speech-Language Pathology: Personal Statement

It is not guaranteed that passion will be found in one’s profession. Like many who pursue a career in Speech-Language Pathology, the opportunity to work with children was what drew me to the profession. For as long as I can remember, that is where my passion was. I followed that passion throughout high school and after, by working at a summer camp for children. As a patient and compassionate person, I loved being with the children as a camp counselor, and when it came time to choose a college major, I knew only that I wanted to have the opportunity to continue doing what I loved. Having multiple family members, including my brother, who greatly benefitted from speech therapy, I looked into it and decided to pursue the major in college. As a freshman, I was very interested in my CSD classes, …show more content…
I experienced the one on one relationship with each of my clients and developed communication skills while working with my supervisors and the client’s family. In my second semester of clinic I worked with a preschool fluency client. Fluency was an area that I was unfamiliar with, and because of this, I had to put excessive time in outside of the clinic. With the guidance of my supervisor, I had to learn to use easy onsets and a reduced rate in my own speech. This turned out to be much more challenging than I had expected; however, in practicing these skills on my own, I gained a greater appreciation for how difficult it must have been for her. I understood what she was going through and could use that to help her reach her goals. The skills I gained from my clinical experience have prepared me for graduate school. In order to succeed, I had to balance clinic work with classwork, which required both time management and organization. I developed a flexibility that allowed me to alter a lesson on the spot depending on what my client

As a Speech-Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) my duties and responsibilities were that of offering special rehabilitation to children with any type of disorders, from speech to learning disabilities. It was to improve their overall day-to-day function in their home, and in society. Many of the children in which I treated all differed in the type of behavior they presented, the therapy and or modification of their reformation would greatly fluctuate depending on the case of each child. Each child had a set of goals that would have to be accomplished in order to reinforce the given behavior, strengthening their improvement. These objectives would be devised and instructed within the therapy setting at the clinic, but for some children the aims…

So I asked Sabrina what she has learned about herself along the way. She explained, that over the past fifteen years she has learned that she really enjoys helping people and that there are many different ways one person can help multiple people. She never expected to be a mentor, but she really enjoys knowing something she has said or completed goes onto impacting someone’s decision on where to attend college. She later went on to to say how the families and students she works with ultimately impact her as well. I relate to this statement because I think having a job where everything comes full circle is important.…

Having spent ten years of my life in a small village in the southeast portion of Iran and the remaining thirteen in the United States, I have come to feel at home in two worlds; possessing native competency in the languages, cultures, and logics that dominate the spheres of thinking in both nations. Upon immigrating to the Unites States, neither I nor my family members spoke any English. I recall the first day I sat in a class in the U.S.—it was my fourth grade class and I was the only student who did not know how to spell their name. I was the top student in all of my classes in Iran, but here, I was struggling with the alphabet.…

Professional Statement It is both a rare and marvelous phenomenon when a person is able to assert that they have not only found their passion in life, but are capable of establishing a career out of that same passion. I am one of the providential individuals who have experienced this. I have been irrefutably certain of my passion for the field of speech-language pathology for many years, and as I find myself at the conclusion of undergraduate career, I can proudly state that my fervor has only continued to grow. While there may be many other individuals parallel to me, I wholeheartedly believe that my enthusiasm for the field, willingness to succeed, and resourceful intellect make me an unassailable candidate for a place in your Masters of Speech-Language Pathology program at Nazareth College. At present, I am completing my Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Speech and Hearing Sciences, with a minor in Psychology, at Edinboro University.…

As a Speech-Language-Hearing undergraduate, I have had a combination of experiences and learning opportunities that have prepared me to enter Emerson College’s graduate school program and become a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP). In my personal life, I have always wanted to be part of a profession that serves the public. My mother is a social worker and my father is a public health administrator, which means serving others is in my blood and was modeled to me from a young age. Growing up watching their commitment to the well being of others inspired this commitment in me. I chose to pursue the career path of Speech Language Pathology based on my personal values and family background.…

While there are many positive outcomes due to technology, I would be biased if I did not state some of the negatives. First off, Speech Pathologists are not trained in technology, so they have to learn how to use all the technological advancements themselves first, before they can introduce it to their clients. Writer Megan Bratti once said, “Speech language pathologists are communication disorder specialists, not computer experts. Many SLPs are from a different, older generation, or just coming out of a newly digitally-connected generation” (Bratti, 2010). With all the advances in technology, and all the help is has given the field of Speech Language Pathology, why should we not teach individuals how to use it, and how to get the most benefit…

Question One The scientific method is an integral part of research. A scientific method is defined as a step by step process that researchers use as a means to decrease experimental error and bias and increase accuracy while making conclusions about the world around them (Bailey, n.d.). Helmenstine (2016) states that the six steps involved in a scientific method include making an observation, asking a question, developing a hypothesis, conducting an experiment, analyzing results, and drawing conclusions. Experimental control is a technique used by researchers where variables are controlled to gain more reliable outcomes in a study (Helmenstine, 2016).…

My passion for occupational therapy began when I first realized I wanted to better understand those that were not as fortunate as what society would call the norm. Within my family, two young male cousins have been diagnosed with autism. I wanted to better understand what type of therapy they were receiving. Though, my initial degree plan was to enter the nursing program, I yearned to learn more about Occupational Therapy.…

I feel that a personal strength in this domain is through my skill of practicing relationally. My ability to communicate and relate to my clients through presencing myself has greatly benefited my practice. I enjoy sitting and talking with my clients, as each client is unique. I have come to notice that by spending a little extra time with the client, I am able to develop a deeper connection, allowing the clients to feel more comfortable in their care. Knowing how to respond to someone who was going through difficult medical treatments, like chemotherapy, or who had lost someone was difficult. Yet the longer I worked in the hospital the more I started to get the sense that tip toeing around patients and families was unnecessary. It just added to the load of their already emotional journey. This was a good lesson to learn early on because illness, death, and dying is a reality of life that I will most likely come into contact with as a counselor. Moreover, working in a hospital was beneficial because I saw how medical professionals interacted with each other and their clients.…
