My first college undergraduate course was Introduction to Communication Disorders. In this class I fell more in love with communication disorders and in the classes to follow I was happy with my decision to become a future SLP. I wanted to get more hands-on experience during my undergraduate studies so I volunteered at my local elementary school with a Speech Language Pathologist, which confirmed my desire to work with children. This volunteer experience gave me a better understanding of the day-to-day roles of a Speech Language Pathologist by presenting me with a variety of services including individual sessions, group sessions, and integrated services in the classroom.

I am prepared to incorporate previous knowledge and experience into my clinical sessions as well as what I am currently learning. In the first sessions I am focused on building rapport with the family and client while gathering information on their interests, hobbies, and school life. The first few sessions are also important to help me gain an understanding of the client’s personality, level of comfort, and openness in a session. I am preparing to think about new semester goals, goals in progress, and the recommendations from past semesters and previous
