Speech Language Pathologist Personal Goals

My college career at Western Washington University started with the desire of one day becoming a speech language pathologist. My passion for the field had already been cultivated by an internship that I acquired during my senior year of high school for 60-hours in early intervention SLP services. While most of my high school classmates had aspirations of meeting new people and having fun in college, I had dreams of getting the opportunity to observe and work in the speech clinic at WWU; unfortunately, all of those dreams seemed to come to a startling halt only a couple months into my college career. During my freshman year of college, my family was suffering from the recession and we lost our home in December of 2012. This moment in my life …show more content…
I knew that, financially, I would not be able to continue straight into graduate school, so I decided to take time off from my education to work to save up enough money. After completing my degree, I secured a 100-hour internship with Harbor Speech Pathology in order to acquire my SLPA license. Upon completion of the internship, I was hired by South Kitsap School District and they requested that I apply for my conditional SLP certification to meet their needs within the district. Through my internship and employment was where I learned about online graduate school options and the ability to work in a well-paying job while still getting an education. Both my internship supervisor at Harbor Speech Pathology, Shannon Baurichter, and a co-worker at South Kitsap School District, Jordan Monasmith, attended Nova Southeastern University and highly recommended it. Moreover, it was through their guidance that I found the solution to my next step towards becoming a SLP. Nova Southeastern University will provide me with the opportunity to be better able to afford graduate school and the freedom to pursue my goals now rather than needing to wait until years into the
