Speech Language Pathologist Application Research Paper

The summer going into my senior year of college, I was diagnosed with a chronic bladder condition called Interstitial Cystitis. This condition affects approximately 3 million women nationwide and there is currently no cure. Many doctors have opinions on what they think will work, but the answer is not the same for all patients. Because of this, I have learned the skill of patient and self-advocacy. I have taken it upon myself to consult multiple opinions, seek out newly researched treatments, and make sure that I am being heard by my doctors. I want to become a speech language pathologist to make sure that everyone is heard and to be their advocate. I have experienced how easily it is to be over looked by professionals, and I want to make it my mission to never make someone I work with feel this way. I have consistently worked fifteen hours a week as a respite employee, have been a two time treasurer of the American Sign Language club, an active member in the peers advocating wellness club, and have held two different executive positions in my fraternity. I also had the honor of being selected 1 out of 200 girls in my sorority to be a campus and chapter crisis advocate. I completed training on sexual assault, rape, eating disorders, substance abuse, mental illness, and healthy relationships to be a trusted source for my peers. I continue to serve in this role and have done so for the past two years. This has been an eye-opening experience in many ways and has confirmed for me that I am a “people person”. The opportunity has further reinforced my desire to make a difference in people’s lives.
