On November 1, 2017, I had the privilege of visiting Mount Carmel Assisted Living to play bingo with the residents. I was greeted by a woman who came to play bingo with her husband who was a resident at arrival. We walked to the bingo room and began setting up. The volunteers conversed with the residents, helped pass out cards, call bingo numbers, and help the residents look for a “bingo”.

As my community assignment, I chose to attend bingo night amongst the elderly at a nursing home. From my experience, I was able to take new views on the elderly, more understanding on the reasons behind their certain behaviors, and knowledge of their daily lives as citizens in the nursing home. My experience held both things I had expected, yet many things which were unexpected to me before I went. My assumptions on certain things were proven wrong and I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn new information about a large group of our society that I was not fully familiar with prior to my visit. My mother is a social worker and my father is a public health administrator, which means serving others is in my blood and was modeled to me from a young age. Growing up watching their commitment to the well being of others inspired this commitment in me. I chose to pursue the career path of Speech Language Pathology based on my personal values and family background.…

To start off I want to explain what brought me to this class. I have known that I wanted to work with individuals with exceptionalities since early high school, but I found a huge liking to the clinical side of things. I initially was looking at going into occupational therapy and my senior year in high school I shadowed a Speech Language Pathologist and absolutely fell in love. This is my second year at MSUM, but I am a junior credit-wise and have never thought about changing majors. I am also working on getting a minor in special education because it is something I love learning about and that knowledge will be extremely helpful in my future career as a Speech Pathologist.…

As a hopeful, speech pathologist, if I was to reflect back on the lifespan that I would feel most challenging in the health system, it would have to be older adulthood. Older adult hood would be difficult to work with as there are a range of issues that may arise or they already are dealing with, that could impact the care in which they accept or receive. This lifespan also has had more life experiences and therefore they may see the treatment that they are going to get as not right or they might feel uncomfortable because they might know someone who has been through the same scenario, and that persons’ treatment may not have worked or it took them a long amount of time to heal. Due to those life experiences they might think they have more knowledge about recovery and how to deal with themselves.…
