Speech Language Classroom Observation

The parish school is an independent school that serves children of 18 months to 12 years of age that have difficulties in the areas of language, communication, and/or learning. At this school I had the opportunity to observe two classrooms. The age range for the first classroom is 2-3 years of age. In this classroom, the teacher who is a Speech Language Pathologist (SLP), was conducting a fun activity. It consisted of showing the class pictures of different animals, and as she was showing them, she produced the animal sound that corresponded to each animal. The students were instructed to repeat each sound by singing them, but one of the students was not following up with the rest of the class. As an auxiliary technique, the SLP decided to …show more content…
Out of all the sites I observed during this semester, this one was my favorite. At this private school I had the opportunity to see how Speech Language Pathologists conduct an entire class while implementing strategies to help students improve their learning, speech , and language difficulties. The only inconvenience that I had at this location was that while observing one of the classrooms, there were some technical difficulties regarding the headphones that were connected to the FM system. I could hear some of the conversation that the teacher was having with her students but I could not hear very clearly because of the headphones. The volume was all the way up and at the beginning they were working fine but after a couple of minutes, I could not hear as much. Overall this is a great school, with beautiful surrounding areas. The children that attend this school had a very positive attitude during class time and seemed to enjoy every single activity provided by the teachers. The staff members are very welcoming, kind and they show their passion for what they do on a daily basis. Therefore, I would recommend this school to any children of ages 2-12 who have difficulties with language, social skills, feeding and swallowing abilities, cognition, memory and executive functioning

The classroom had 17 children in total, 1 of which was an English Learner. His name was Carlos and, saying his name to me was the only word he said in class for the duration of the time that I had been in the classroom. Carlos is young boy whose parents are completely Spanish. I was told by Mrs Varvil, that even at parent conferences only the mother has understand of what is being said and is able to partially converse. When I first entered the classroom, the children were all on the floor working together to write a letter to Ruby Bridges, who became their topic in education on race and segregation in the 1950/1960s.…

Adults can effectively support and extend the speech, language and communication development of children during early years by making learning fun and enjoyable and using games that require a lot of repetition and turn taking. Singing songs is another way and children don’t realise they are learning this way. Make sure you speak clearly and pronounce your letters and words correctly so children don’t get confused and can easily copy back to you. Always have a positive, friendly tone of voice, smile and use positive body language to encourage children to follow your example. Always give positive comments to children and try to encourage repeated good behaviour by rewarding them with things like stickers and team points so thy and others want to copy this behaviour.…

For my second observation, I observed behavior at Pinecreek Elementary School in the Brookville School District which contains grades one through two. I observed in the speech therapy room which is a separate room where kids get pulled out of class to receive therapy. I watched two sets of students, one was an individual therapy session and the other was a group of two students. Since the school is so small it is only necessary for there to be one speech pathologist, Mrs. Martz.…

On Monday, during the third period, I observed a read-aloud lesson. After the teacher wrote the title of the book, she called the students over to the meeting area. Prior to the read aloud, the teacher set strict expectations for the students. For instance, the teacher advised the students that they had to remain seated “Criss-Crossed Applesauce” and raised their hands if they had a question or a comment about the reading. Otherwise, they had to sit calm and quiet.…

I do not not know what the kids thought of the voice, and if they were so used to it that it did not make an impression on them, but the voice was something I did not think was very necessary. Another thing that made an impression on me was the condition of the classroom. It was very run down. There were exposed pipes and, the yellow insulation in the pumps was very visible. I feel as if that might be a safety hazard because I don't know exactly what exposed pipes can lead to, but it is probably better not to have them out.…

I can empathize with teachers who say that the observation and evaluation process does not seem reciprocal in nature. Most of my follow-up evaluations have either been waived or conducted in five minutes or less in which the principal hits upon the highlights of my observation. Very few teaching lessons have been learned through these interactions. In her article though, Shelly Arneson includes sound practices that can be implemented to alleviate many of the concerns of the evaluation process. Her basic premise is to shift the dialogue from inspection-based conversation to a reflection-based conversation.…
