Rhetorical Speech Reflection Rhetorical techniques within my speech were subtle yet still managed to enhance the message I was trying to convey; that all firearms should be banned in the United States. I used a combination of rhetorical techniques including; anaphora, hypophora, a mild chiasmus, alliteration, and sententia. Halfway through my speech, I used anaphora when I was describing the different reasons people have for owning guns. This particular method was helpful because I wanted to portray the reasons as ridiculous and repetitive, which paired well with anaphora, since it added to the redundancy with its own repeating sentence beginnings. Another technique I used later on in the speech is hypophora. I used it in the context of asking …show more content…
This technique was particularly useful, because it allowed me to pose the question about our government’s action in a manner that left people expecting a certain answer and then answering the question with a simple one word answer that contradicted the expectations. People would logically think a government would act after several mass shootings, and then the answer really put into perspective our government’s lack of effectiveness on gun control. In the last sentence of my speech, I used both alliteration and sententia. I described what our country should be in regards to firearms, using the words sensible and safe. I used the phrase, “priority above all else”, to say that safety and sensibility on the topic of gun control should be our goal. These techniques were good just by allowing the final sentence to have a ring to it, so that it flowed well, and was memorable. Overall, I used anaphora to emphasize a point, anaphora to describe a situation, and alliteration with sententia to …show more content…
My goal was to get up to the podium, give my speech, and use the inflections and tones I intended for the speech. I would say I was pretty successful in doing so. In a few spots I lacked the tone I wanted, but for the most part, and the important parts, like the sarcastic bits, I did use inflection that was necessary. My pacing was a little off at points, but I expected that to happen sooner or later since I was nervous. I also wanted to incorporate rhetoric, without making it an extremely emotional, more a fact based speech, which I feel accomplished. More or less, I got the reaction I wanted from the audience. I felt like it was not so boring that I lost anyone, and I definitely got a couple laughs at some of the jokes I tried. If I were to rewrite or perform my speech again, I’d probably do a few things differently. The main thing I’d do differently, would be to look up from the paper more. Before giving my speech, I did not think this would be a challenge, but once I was actually up there with all my nerves, I found it pretty difficult, to sustain speaking without looking at my script. I also might make it a tiny bit longer, only because I felt as though I had enough extra time that I could have added another

My rhetorical ecology’s primary goal is to articulate the many levels of statistical data surrounding gun control in the US. I start off the presentation with the Bill of Rights and immediately provide commentary from individuals who played a fundamental role in the foundation of the United States. Then, I state current gun control laws currently in place. From here on out, I expand on specific analytics: mass shootings, other deadlier killers, and total firearm violence. The audience this argument appeals to is people who react to gun control regulations after mass shootings occur.…

Pathos, logos, and ethos are all means of persuading others to take on a particular point of view. In the most recent presidential debate between Clinton and Trump, they both successfully utilized all the three appeals to convince the audience for their votes. By using pathos, logos, and ethos, the two presidential candidates were also able to argue their sides and propose plans for America’s future. Pathos is a significant and powerful tool of persuasion in arguments. For example, Clinton successfully utilized pathos to appeal to the middle class audience by mentioning her father starting out as a “small businessman” who “worked really hard”.…

The second rhetorical strategy I will be talking about in this paragraph is that of Sentence Structure. Sentence Structure is the plainly, the order of your word in the sentence. The order that you select will have an impact on what is emphasized and what is minimized. Not only does the structure matter, but the length of the sentence can also have an effect on what is emphasized as well. Generally the longer the sentence, the greater the chance to bury a detail that you do not wish to highlight.…

Something that I felt I did well was keeping my composure and using a really good tone of voice. One thing that I needed to work on was my introducing. I played a video clip of a flyover map of Landsmeer Golf Club, which was very interesting and graphic. However, I wish that I would have explained what the video was about before I presented it to my fellow classmates, so that they could get an idea of what my topic was going to be about. Things that happened during my speech was that the USB disk was not connecting correctly and so we had to figure out the technical difficulties before I presented the speech.…

Throughout the first quarter, our class has read many essays that are examples of different rhetorical modes. Many of these essays were well written and thought provoking, but five of them stood out to me the most. “That Lean and Hungry Look”’was an essay that raised controversy in my mind on its effectiveness and its truthfulness. “Coming into Language” was an essay that’s language brought the story to life, and gave it deeper meaning. “No Rainbows, No Roses” was an essay that was emotionally compelling, with beautiful descriptions.…

Personally I think i did very well on my speech, I did have one big pause, and skipped some of my script. Monroe's Motivated Sequence did not go so well. I didn't/forgot to follow the sequence, but I tried to recover the speech through plain persuasion. I did not feel nervous going first, I felt bold and felt like I had the most power over the other speeches due to the fact I would probably get the most attention, unfortunately, i got a lot of attention from the teacher. All together this was a great unit, I had fun with it, and truly believed in what I was speaking…

Gun control is a major hot button issue in the United States currently; there are multiple different viewpoints and many different facts supporting those views. In order to support these viewpoints arguers will appeal to a person’s character, emotion, and utilize facts to persuade that person. These aspects are respectively called ethos, logos, and pathos; these three tools of rhetoric are used to support both sides of the gun control debate. All three of these tools use the idea of labeling to explain both sides. Labeling is the idea THAT While ethos, logos, and pathos all discuss different aspects of gun control: within each aspect labeling is used to further the need or absence of gun control.…

In the essay, “Just Take Away Their Guns”, James Q. Wilson a Management and Policy professor at UCLA, argues that legally owned guns are not the problem, in fact the real problem lies with society ignoring the usage of illegal guns. The purpose of this essay is to convey to society that gun crimes can be stopped before a shot is fired, that it does not entitle a huge stack of forms at the local gun store. Wilson effectively argues that legally owned guns are necessary for citizens to protect themselves, reasonable police frisks should be in place to stop illegal gun use before the crime is committed and ultimately guns agitate the situation making crimes worse. The authors credibility and logical appeal are overall effective, in spite of the lack of emotional appeal or connection to the audience. Despite the absence of Pathos, the author conveys an adequate amount of logic, which carries the paper to an effective and persuasive conclusion.…
