Speech and Language Therapy Assessments

Each child with ASD is individual in their needs and ability so assessments should be chosen to suit Joshua’s in terms of his behavioural challenges and capability.

The New Reynell Developmental Language Scales (NRDLS) is used to identify speech and language delays and impairments in young children. It would be suitable for Joshua as it uses both play-based activities with objects and colourful illustrations to gain diagnostic information about production and understanding of spoken language (Reynell Assessment 2017). Joshua’s behavioral challenges may mean that he struggles to keep his attention on the activity, however the objects and illustrations may help him focus.

Mark Haddon was successful in creating the voice of an autistic teenage boy in the book. The book is mostly in first-person narrated by Christopher, which makes it easier for the readers to understand the kind of autistic person Christopher is and how he feels rather than if someone else was narrating the novel. After reading the article on “Ten Things Every Child With Autism Wishes You Know” and watching Temple Grandin, it made it easier to understand autism. In the book, when Christopher explains or prove something, he talks super fast, for example, in (page 116-118) of the book, he talks about how humans think their minds are different from computers. Christopher interprets language literally, like metaphors and idioms.…

ASD can be differentiated from other developmental difficulties as a result of the inclusion of a language assessment along with standardized cognitive and developmental testing. The results of these tests give professionals information regarding a child’s overall level of ability and functioning in both verbal and nonverbal areas. They are an essential starting point for making a best estimate of a clinical diagnosis. Some of the useful tools used in testing children and toddlers for autism include different versions of the Autism Diagnostic Observational Schedule which continues to be revised to improve accuracy and expand its clinical utility (Huerta and Lord, 2012).…

Conversations are conducted using facial expressions to show emotions and words, at times, metaphors. A person can say:” its raining cats and dogs” with a smile or a frown. The presence of a frown showing expression, automatically states that the individual is not pleased with the weather. Christopher’s difficulty with talking and understanding people is caused by his autism whereby he cannot identify emotions, metaphors and jokes associated with the conversation. “[Christopher] cannot tell jokes because [he] do not understand them” (8). “…

Participant 15 mentioned that she thinks her friend has autism because “she talks weirdly” and “gets confused with past tense and present tense”. Although this may be a case with some people with autism, and she could correctly answer the following questions regarding core attributes of individuals with autism (i.e., may need help with learning how to read or write, may have difficulty in talking or expressing themselves), if such a feature is her only way to determine whether someone has autism or not, this may lead her to a serious misunderstanding and misinterpretation. A few students commented about what a person would look like if he or she has autism, and how they would recognise a person with autism by appearance, according to their…

Improved gross and fine motor skills have significant cognitive and socioemotional implications. Early motor development has been used for a long time as a foresight for later age motor and cognitive development. Researchers have long realized that specific motor development milestones, like walking or crawling, can help doctors and parents track early development in their children. Recently, they have learned that those milestones may be a useful tool for predicting later age development. Research shows that how quickly some children achieve major motor development milestones were predictors of later age performance in memory.…

PECS is effective for children with developmental disabilities and Autism due to the inherent simplicity, lessened demands, built-in reinforcers, and versatility (Cihak et al., 2012). This intervention approach aims to use symbols and pictures to teach unprompted communicative skills within a social context (Magiati & Howlin, 2003). After using PECS, students experienced success as communicators (Schwartz et al., 1998). Participants in many studies demonstrated increases in average intelligible words spoken per trial (Ganz & Simpson, 2004; Schwartz et al., 1998).…
