Informative Speech On Thanksgiving Rituals

Improved Essays
Along with material culture, there was an abundance of speech acts throughout my Thanksgiving ritual. I noticed much talk about college and older family members giving college student family members advice about their career decisions. Thus, we participate in the “career advice ritual.” These statements include, “Make sure you attend class and get to know your professors” or “I hope you are participating in extra activities outside of class” or “Make sure that you can get a job out of college with your major choice” or “Do you have a part time job now? If not, get one.” Typically, the males including my grandfather, my dad, and my uncles make these statements. Though, my grandma instructs us that “If you lose your sense of humor, you might …show more content…
We tell numerous stories of our summer vacation home in Northern Ontario, Canada at all family rituals. Because my cousin’s girlfriend, Brenna, participated in our Thanksgiving ritual for the first time, she became enculturated in the stories of our vacation home. My dad jokingly describes to Brenna, “I took your boyfriend fishing one time and he caught his first fish! He was scared when I brought it into the boat and wouldn’t touch it. When we got back to the island, he didn’t even want to take a picture with it. Haha. It was so funny.” Also, he joking follows with, “Also one time, Scott [my dad’s younger brother] was driving back to the island and got lost in the fog. Haha. He was all the way up the main channel and didn’t have the GPS. Good thing Danny [my dad’s youngest brother] came to save my boat [my dad and Scott own a boat together].” My dad uses a playful tone when describing vacation stories and conveys to the listener that vacation is a time of laughter and fun. Also, the way the participants tell stories of our summer home shows the importance to my family’s identity. The time spent in the middle of the wilderness at our camp is like no other experience, and other’s find it difficult to understand. Thus, it would not be a Baker family gathering without talk of our vacation

As the daughter of parents who love to travel, I’ve had the pleasure of travelling across Canada and America as well as a few other countries from a young age. I have visited the loud and bustling streets of Tokyo and the ethereal gardens in Kyoto, stood on the edge of the Grand Canyon, walked the strip in Las Vegas, and watch the sun set over the Atlantic Ocean in Martha’s Vineyard. Although I should be able to look back on a childhood filled with events and memories from trips, I find it difficult to recall most vacations without a visual prompt. When I flip through old family photo albums, I don’t recall much more than what is shown in their pages. The outdated clothing, the people, and the locations are seen in the images, and therefore…
