Specialty Overview: Medical-Surgical Nursing The specialty I find particularly interesting is medical-surgical nursing. It is the single largest nursing specialty in the United States accounting for almost 1/6th of the nursing profession. A specialty organization in the medical-surgical nursing profession is the Academy of Medical-Surgical Nurses (AMSM). Medical-Surgical nurses have direct contact with patients and normally care for adult patients in different settings. I learned that it is originally viewed as an entry level position where nurses are able gain experience before entering into their desired specialty but its is still a specialty in itself. Having had several clinical hours working on floors of this nature, I would feel most prepared to apply and build upon my existing skillset. Furthermore, I tutored the medical-surgical courses at Northeastern University, giving me the experience needed to apply critical thinking in such an area of nursing. My goal, if hired by MedStar Georgetown University Hospital, would be to immediately contribute to the workflow of the hospital, and provide patient care that is safe, and considerate of the patient’s culture, ethnic background, religion, etc. I look forward to the prospect of interviewing with you and the recruitment staff at your fine…

The barrier remains to find preceptors and providers willing to work in underserved populations and gain valuable experience working with marginalized populations. In Bemidji Minnesota, the CNS or DNP as the preceptor for underserved populations remains a plausible focus. This will require the National Association of Clinical Nurse Specialists (NACNS) to champion the role of the CNS in credentialing bodies, DNP schools of nursing to create curriculum changes to include 75 hours of clinical service to underserved populations, offer innovative clinical sites to schools of nursing with available preceptors, and create guidelines to include 75 hours of clinical service to underserved populations to renew an APRN license for state boards of nursing.…
