Specialized Degree In High Schools

“Knowledge is power” (Francis Bacon). One way to gain knowledge is through graduating high school and receiving a diploma. To obtain a high school diploma a student must complete and pass a predetermined number of classes in order to accomplish graduation requirements. Securing a high school diploma is the key to receiving a higher education at either a college or a trade school. However, most public high schools offer one diploma, which is measured to the needs of the average student. This general diploma restricts the type of classes that can be taken and does not meet the needs of every student. High schools should be required to offer specialized diplomas to their students. One advantage of a specialized diploma is it allows students to take classes specific to their career choice. Rather than taking classes such as physics, which take not be helpful in their career choice, students should be able to choose and take classes that will help them prepare for their chosen career. For example, the state of Florida offers two high school diplomas. A general diploma and a vocational diploma are offered. In high school many students take easy classes in order to maintain a high grade point average so it will look good on their job resume. This is unfair to the student who challenges themselves in school in order to gain more knowledge and skill, but might not have as high of grade point average as the student who took easy classes and as a result their resume might not look as good. An employer will hire the person with the better job resume, even though that person possesses less skill. A specialized diploma would solve all this because it would supply an employer with information on the knowledge and skill of each employee which would allow the employer to make a factual decision on who to
