Treatment Of College Athletes Essay

Superior Essays
The special treatment of college athletes in academics is helping them now, but is hurting them for the future. Numerous studies and records show that these athletes start off college unprepared and continue throughout college on the same level. With a lot of side corruption happening they are able to play for the school and not learn a thing. Yes everything is peaches and cream now, but what’s going to happen when they start looking for employment? Reports given by the College Sports Project show that male recruited athletes, generally have lower GPA’s than their non-athlete counterparts on average. Sources show that according the recent records “Georgia Tech’s football players had the nation’s best average SAT score, 1028 of a possible 1600, and the best average high school GPA, 3.39 of a possible 4.0 in the core curriculum. Tech’s football players still scored 315 SAT points lower on average than …show more content…
Every counselor, athletic director, college recruiter, college professor, and admissions worker should stop giving special treatment and give these players the same amount of responsibility as the next student. But quite frankly this issue probably won’t be solved any time soon if ever. It’s been happening this long, and the system is so strong and complex, no matter the exposure given will still keep pushing on. So the best idea that will be easier and a lot quicker to happen is that athletes should take it upon themselves to get a better education. Push away the special treatments, play your sports and take the time to get your education. If they think about the future more so than the present, that would be a motivation to go the extra mile and get their work done just like the other students around them. Special treatments may be helping them now, but once that diploma hits their hand on graduation day all of that will go out the

Imagine if you were a college athlete striving to provide entertainment for your student body and college fans, along with bringing in revenue for your school. Would you want to be paid for all the hard work, time, and dedication you put in, or are scholarships and grants enough to satisfy you? Whether or not college athletes should be paid is a huge controversy in today’s society and includes many pros and cons. One pro being that college athletics provide revenue for companies, but if we were to play devil’s advocate one could say that the student athletes already receive benefits through the school such as scholarship money, grants, and part time jobs. Through research I have discovered that the cons out weigh the pros, therefore, it would…

But is more evident that no time soon will colleges be paying student athletes, there are multiple reasons why it will not work. Although Reed Karaim makes some valid points the NCAA cannot pay all college athletes. It is clear that, in addition to their academic course loads, student-athletes’ physical conditioning, practice, travel and competition schedules make it difficult for many of them to take on part-time employment to supplement their institutional aid as do other students, but they took on that responsibility when they continued to compete; but student athlete’s should not be…

Such competition overshadows a student’s job, which is to study. Only 2.5% of all college athletes will play professional and solely devoting a students time to athletics will ultimately lead to the demise of 97.5% college athletes who’s education has been jeopardized by sports. The NCAA is not a socially responsible corporation as it riddles its employees (student-athletes) of their time and education all for more…

Most college athletes aren’t good enough to make it to the next level, so why should they be paid to play a sport that they have no future in? Besides, many athletes get scholarships for tuition, room and board, and textbooks. They aren 't actually given money, but getting those things free is a lot like being paid (Cambio 7). Most of their schooling is paid for by scholarships . They do not deserve to be paid to go to school to get an education to go make money at a job.…

College Athletes expect too much such as getting paid, but don’t actually focus on school. The athletes want money but if they were to get paid they wouldn’t show up to class and they would not know how to manage the money properly and not deal with the money in a childish type of way. The players want money but who is going to pay for everything else that they need to have? If they paid all of the athletes they would be paying a lot of money to all of those athletes.…

Over the past few years college athletics have gained tons of popularity and exposure all over America through television, the internet, and social media. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and participating colleges have earned increased revenues because of all the exposure that they have acquired. Even though the NCAA makes millions of dollars from sponsors, commercials, and tournaments, the players who play for the college teams receive no compensation whatsoever for all their hard work and dedication. Imagine being a dedicated worker working long hours far from home every single day, doing college work and studying for exams, bringing in millions of dollars to an employer and not getting paid at all for working hard. That is basically what all college athletes are going through when they work hard everyday in school, go to practice, win games on TV, and do not benefit from the profits that they helped earn for a revenue producing sport at a National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) member institution.…

According to Chudacoff, “These athletes are already treated like campus royalty, enjoying far more perks, and richer ones, than their classmates could dream of.” We already know of all the awesome facilities, staff, and several other perks that these athletes receive, very similar to ones of professional sports teams. If universities feel the need to continue to grow their facilities and image because other campuses are doing the same, the average student may begin to feel unfairly treated. It will feel as though the sport is more important than education. Average students will begin to ask why can’t the university put more money into funding new educational facilities to better expand their expensive education.…

Everyone feels bad for them because they don’t have laundry and movie money, but the reality is that most of these athletes will blow their money on alcohol, expensive apparel, and marijuana. College athletes do not need money like they say they do, and like people believe college athletes do. People say that college athletes are getting ripped off financially, but these students have the opportunity of a lifetime to go to some of the best colleges in the country and still have a great educational career. Sadly, most of these college athletes do not use their scholarships to the full potential and only worry about football instead of classes as well. Athletes could also get an amazing degree with their full ride scholarship that most of them acquire (Sports and…

The NCAA should try and work something out with the players on how to fix this problem because having some of these all-star caliber players that make their team not only good but might even cause other fans to watch college basketball just to watch the one guy crush the competition and make them TV money for hundreds of fans tuning in. On the USA Today article written by Georgetown alumni Roman Mama he says that all the facts he lists in the article are all reasons why college athletes probably should be paid. He talks about how almost all coaches are paid $1+ million a year to coach, and how the NCAA makes $800 million just from one tournament alone (Mama). College teams make enough money a year to be able to pay players for the rest of their lives and they can not even pay players for 4 years to help them maybe win a championship. From the article “Should College Athletes Get Paid?” posted by Paul Astorino he stated that when the UConn men's basketball team won the National Championship only 33% of their players graduated from the college.…

Unfortunately what critics lack to admit is that normal student’s face these same issues, being involved in on campus clubs and other ordeals those normal students face no one truly has a lot of time to get a job. Athletes have built in connections that non-athletes do not have, so being on an athletic team is by far more advantageous then simply being a student. So why should student athletes be the only students benefitting monetarily for their hard work (College Athletes). No one is enslaving nor, “forcing these athlete-students to play football. Don't hand me the garbage about it being their only opportunity in life.…

According to some, getting a full ride to a college isn’t enough. Many think that college athletes should be getting paid because their sport, is their job. Others think that getting a full ride to go to school is enough and college athletes get enough benefits as it is. College athletes may take an educational decline to support their team but these athletes have many tools for success that everyday students are having to pay for. College athletes shouldn’t be paid to play sports because many are already getting scholarships to help out the financial aspect of college, recruiting athletes would be even more based on having a powerhouse, wealthy school than it already is, and these athletes are given an opportunity to become professional athletes,…

Being a student athlete is a wonderful thing in high school, despite a lot of people only acknowledge the athlete part and not the student part. I believe that academics come first and if a high school student wants to be an athlete, then getting good grades should be a requirement. It should be mandatory for teachers and coaches to check the grades of student athletes weekly to determine whether students are performing academically well or not. The students that aren’t doing well should be dismissed from any further games and practices until their grades improve. It is important that student athletes maintain good grades because the work that they put into their school performance carries with them through life, putting too much of an emphasis…
