In the article “What is a ‘System of Privilege”, sociologist and public speaker Allan G. Johnson explains how privilege, specifically white privilege in this case, works as a system. “Privilege does not guarantee good outcomes for the privileged group or bad outcomes for everyone else” according to Johnson, however, it does load the odds one way or the other. Unfortunately, social privilege is often invisible to those who experience them, claims Johnson. Johnson goes on to describe a few examples to validate his claim. For example, in a recent survey a group of volunteers were asked to close their eyes and picture a drug dealer.…
The author gives a "key" evidence for the meaning of "spared injustice" privileges. For instance, a Black person is stopped by the police without due cause that a white person is not. With this instance, the privilege is in spared an injustice suffered by the person of color, but with out further benefiting from that injustice. Differently, the "unjust enrichment privileges" is the white person getting benefits from the injustice to the persons of color. For instance, since police usually focus on the Black lawbreakers, they would be less concern on the whites who do break the laws.…
In the text “Bifocal” by Deborah Ellis and Eric Walter, I personally think privilege is the main theme. The event that helps me understand this was when Haroon and Azeem got accused by the police that they were terrorists even though they weren’t. This event was a factor of privilege because the police identified them as terrorists judging by their brown race, in the text most brown people are seen as criminals and terrorists. Haroon and Azeem weren’t the only ones insulted for being brown, many others were also. An example in the text that proves this was when Haroon, Azeem and many others were visiting Azeem in the courthouse, a white driver drove by shouting “go back to were you’re from!”…
What exactly is white privilege, one might say? White privilege is knowing that one has unearned privilege but choose to ignore the meaning of it. " White Privilege Shapes the U.S" by Robert Jensen, first appeared in the Baltimore Sun on July 19, 1998. In this editorial, Jensen speaks about his personal experience on white privilege and how being white can give them more unearned privilege than those of other races. Furthermore, Jensen states that unearned white privilege was given rather than by working hard for it, but faces the choice on how they use it, and to admit they have benefitted from it.…
The Mean Tractor Who Destroyed Everything It was fall time and it was eerily chilly outside. Leaves had start to turn a vibrant orange and red. I looked outside the living room window but I couldn’t see.…
Privilege Exercise Answers: -I have competed exercises like this before, but with much more in depth questions. I think that this exercise is great to do with people of all different backgrounds and then you can compare your answers. I am a white female from a middle class family and I was able to answer all the questions with a yes. I do find this exercise eye opening to show me that I am privileged where I live. -Social justice fits into this exercise because the exercise shows that not everyone has the same opportunities in a society.…

She came home and I was riding down the street next to her to surprise her with my new accomplishment. Most of the things that I did as a kid were derived from wanting to surprise my parents, whether it was something good or jumping out from behind the couch to scare them. I thought I was always different, in the way that I wasn’t a boring kid. Always wanting to do things, showcase skills, and be social with family friends.…
Ralph Ellison, author of On Being the Target of Discrimination, did an excellent job describing the daily life of an African American child during the segregation era. This text has powerful lessons that he went through that shape the story into what it is today. On Being the Target of Discrimination is a narrative essay that relies on pathos to persuade its primary audience of white people in America how racism affects a kid’s childhood. The author had a very clear image of how he wanted to present the sole purpose of this text which was by presenting lessons the main character experienced. There are some things, particularly audience and word choice that overlap together in a way that make you think of the text in another dimension.…
Privilege The first form of privilege I benefit from is white privilege. Because of the skin I was born in, I will never have to worry about not being taken seriously in a professional setting based on my race. I will never have to worry about going into a convent store on my own and being followed or accused of stealing. I can speak my mind without being called racial slurs.…
As a white male I am oblivious to the fact that I have privilege in this country as a poor white male I don’t tend to see much in the ways of advantage, but I do have them and I tend to see things in a different light because I never have them come up in conversation. I live a simple life and I try to treat everyone the same regardless of their color or gender. I do agree with all of the 6 reasons and know them to be true because some of them I am guilty of and I know a lot of people that are guilty of the ones that I may not be guilty of. The mindset of myself can be judgmental at times and it does usually end up in me feeling bad later on but I am just as guilty as most white males.…
When The Dead Walk, You Run. Day 1 2:50 pm Mom told me I should write a journal, I beg to differ but I love my mom so I couldn’t have said no. Today was a beautiful day, the sun was never brighter than ever before. I didn’t do much today, it was just like any other day Day 2 4:25 pm…
Different Privileges for Different Skin Tones Racial profiling is unacceptable. Police officers are taking advantage of their authority to racially profile people of color, by humiliating, harassing, and arresting them. It is not hard to perceive how people from different countries and skin colors are being racially profiled and accused of criminal acts. It is truly ironic how the "United" States of America is only united when it comes to certain ethnicities.…
If someone tells you to check your privilege, how do you respond? Does an immediate sense of guilt wash over your body? Do you stop to evaluate how this might be true? Or do you simply ignore it and carry on. Every day in our lives, whether we are aware of it or not, we are confronted with the notion of “privilege”.…
After I ace my science test and make it through two tortuous days. My friends are sympathetic at least. Finally, Friday afternoon comes and I start packing. Once I got everything I need I send and quick wish for good luck text to the group chat, and get what work I can get done to night.…
