As a Special Olympics Coach and Mentor I have the honor of being able to work with their athletes. Ever since I was a little girl I remember being friends with other children who had intellectual disabilities. I noticed despite their diagnosis it never prevented us from creating bonds and becoming friends.
It was a natural step for me to begin volunteering with the Special Olympics. I was not sure what to expect when I started going to the sporting events. However immediately after I realized what a gift the organization was for not only the athletes but also the volunteers. They managed to create an environment that was truly welcoming to all people. Each athlete was full of joy, not only for themselves, but also for the other participants.

Sport for All’(referred to here as SFA from now on) was a campaign created in 1972 by the Sports Council (Jeffery’s, K. 2012), this was their first policy and made possible by the granting of executive status, freeing it from direct ministerial control. SFA encompassed many initiatives aimed at getting more people of all ages playing sport. Some critics thought that the amount of money to be spent on the scheme was too low when compared to other countries. One of the main barriers that had to be faced moving into the 80’s was the volatility of the economic climate, particularly from 1983 to 1988 (Economicshelp.org). During this time an increase in participation would have been hard to achieve as the population would have had less money and…

The 2016 summer Olympics will be in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil on August 5. This tradition started in 776 BC in ancient Greece (“The Real Story”). The final games of the ancient Olympics ended in 393 AD because of the fact that a Greek ruler named Theodosios decreed that all cult practices, including the Olympics, be ended (Cartwright). Barron Pierre de Coubertin, a French aristocrat, suggested 1503 years later the idea of bringing back the Olympics in 1804 because he thought the more physical education would better the military (McNamara).Since their revival in 1804, the Olympics have kept some of the events the same, but also added and removed some. One of the most noticeable differences between the ancient and modern Olympics is the amount of events.…

Imagine having to change your whole life for a disability the way you walk, run, and you go through life by being separated from what society calls normal. After years of technological advancements, many amputee athletes still continue to face discrimination, and in many cases they have no chance at the opportunity to perform in the Olympics. Many believe that a disability defines one and that these technological advancements make it ethically unfair to perform within the Olympics. However, others can argue that there are very few differences between a non-disabled and an amputee athlete. Ultimately, the controversy is whether or not an amputee athlete should be allowed to partake in an Olympian sport.…
