Special Olympics Interview Report

In high school I had a desire to go to Special Olympics, but when it came down to it, I did not have time and I did not know how to get involved. One day in Foundations of OT we talked about an assignment that we had to participated in which was Special Olympics. I was so excited because I have been wanting to for a very long time. On April 30, 2016 I drove to Westminster Christian Academy excited more than ever, wondering whom was I going to be paired with or if this athlete and I would click. Most of us checked-in at 7:30 a.m.. Hannah and I were assigned Franklin County. We went in the gym excited to meet our buddies. We had an award ceremony and a parade announcing the athletes. When the MC announced us to get with the coaches ours were nowhere in sight. We walked to check-in to find out that out team did not show up, so we were then assigned to Lincoln County Roadrunners. There I met my friend, Thomas. Now by my observations, Thomas had a form of autism. I could not interview his parents because they were not there or his coach because she had to watch other athletes. He had a stepbrother, Erik, who was also an athlete, joining him for the day and was …show more content…
What I learned about myself is that I really like what Special Olympics is all about, from their event itself, to the lives it impacts throughout the years. I cannot wait for next year. How this experience will influence my behavior from here and on out is having the mindset that people with disabilities should never be treated differently. They should have every opportunity that everyone else has, because most have shown that they can be leaders too with our help. They have really opened my eyes to what they are capable of and with that, I can teach them instead of do it for them. This correlates with my OT Practice that with the correct teaching, people are capable of most

As an athlete, I began my journey in sports full of dedication, fire, and hopeful anticipation of what I could do on the football field and on the basketball court. Much of my life has been devoted to extracurricular activities such as sports and the comelec, which taught me hard lessons in ethics and values that have made me who I am today. I not only represented my school varsity, but also sports clubs outside of school, which led me to compete in several local and international tournaments. As well as my passion for sports, I grew into my passion for service; service for others and for my school, partaking in clubs and community service activities, each endeavor playing a role in the development of my abilities and expansion of my potential…

As my second level 1 Fieldwork, I chose to volunteer for the Raleigh County Special Olympics Cheerleading team. There were four cheerleaders whose deficits ranged from Down syndrome, psychological, speech, low muscle tone, also across the autism spectrum. In which, Cheerleading enhances the following: attention span, comprehension, organization, sequencing, increased endurance, postural control, and increases social skills. Over a course of a month we gathered to participate in the learning of cheers and a competition dance. The support the athlete’s family had showed during practices and competition was influential to not only their child or family member but to me, as a volunteer and as an Occupational Therapy Assistant Student.…

This has been my involvement for the last several years as a volunteer coach/buddy with a special needs cheer team called The Precious Gems. Throughout my four years of high school, the seaside community of Narragansett, Rhode Island, has encouraged and nurtured the growth of its youthful inhabitants as students and individuals. The supportive environment and abundant opportunities available for students to pursue their passions and help others consequently benefits the community as a whole. As an athlete, and more specifically, a runner, I have aspired to motivate and encourage young athletes to enjoy the fun and friendships that emerge from being a part of a sports team. During the summer, I volunteered at the Summer Youth Track Series at Narragansett High School. Eager smiles painted the faces of the joyous young runners lining up in heats, ready to run as fast as they can in the 100 meter sprint, throw as far as they can in the turbo javelin, and jump as far as they can in the long jump.…

For the disability ministry project, we were asked to choose a practicum experience where we shadowed or spoke to someone helping someone with a disability. For my project I chose to spend some time in the class for disabled children at the high school I graduated from. Throughout the glimpse of time that was allotted for this particular practicum experience I learned a lot of exciting things about disabilities, but also made some disconcerting revelations. While spending the day at school I was able to interact with the students, teachers, and overall staff of the high school; gaining insights, perspectives, and forming thoughts on everything I had witnessed. From start to finish, my day back at school has left a lasting impression on me.…

The girl’s varsity basketball program at Rockwall High School holds one state championship title, an unbroken district championship record of nearly twelve years and has competed in a total of three state championship games since 2005; the third state championship being in 2011¬, my freshman year. Though I had been playing basketball all my life, I knew I could improve myself after having been on the “B team” in middle school. I was still just discovering how to be fully in control of my long, lanky limbs, but nonetheless, I wanted more than to go out on the court and perform just as skillfully and poised as the girls on our varsity team. I mean they were going to state. They were celebrities in my eyes and they had earned it, too.…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…
