In a post apocalyptic world where modern medicine and technology is barely used, and most of the population has died because of a plague spread by rats. People must thrive and live on the land, and people must work together in harmony to survive. On the island Hatteras, which is connected to the island Roanoke by a bridge lives a tribe of 14 people. Everyone on the island has special gifts, and because of these gifts they’re known as elemetals. Elementals are people who were born with the ability to control fire, wind, earth, and water. They’re a few exceptions when it comes to elementals that have a different gift other than fire, wind, earth, and water. Every person who has a elemental also has a echo. After reading part of the journal Thomas discovers that his grandma was exiled from Hatteras, so they assume she is on Roanoke island hiding. Thomas goes into the clinic, and finds a trapdoor in the ceiling. He opens it up, and finds his grandma hiding up there from everyone. She tells him he is not elementless, and then proceeds to throw a oil lamp at him and he catches it then the flame in it erupts huge making a blinding light. She tells him he has the power to channel energy, and the reason people don’t touch him is because his echo hurts others it’s like a jolt of pain almost like electricity . Then the pirates who previously didn't step on Roanoke island because they thought the plague was on that island attack, so Thomas and Alice distract the pirates while everyone else travels to the pirate ship to save the guardians. Thomas and Alice quick wit the pirates and escape them, and then they get on board the pirate ship then they sail it away from Hatteras island. Only to discover as they left that Dare was missing from the rest of the pirates trapped on Hatteras. Thomas and the others free all the guardians only to discover his father was almost beat to death because dare was looking for the solution to the plague.
