Mitch Aldrich – Special Education – Resource Teacher

I am so grateful to be joining the Holston View community! This will be my 10th year teaching students with special needs. I love working with children who learn in different ways and establishing a caring and supportive environment for them to best achieve their goals.

I was born in Virginia, so in many ways I feel like moving to Bristol is like coming home. I taught students in Phoenix and Denver previously, but I’m looking forward to a smaller town and the new pace of life.

My family is very important to me and I love exploring the outdoors with them. I have been married to my best friend, Laura, for 6 years. We have 3 amazing children (Abigail 5, Silas 4, and Samuel 1 ½). When I

I look forward to continuing to work with the students and parents in the community. My goal is to help the students learn the importance of being active during their youth and continuing that physical activity for the rest of their lives promoting better, healthier lifestyles. I want each child to look forward to coming to PE class ready to learn new games, physical activities, and healthy habits.
I was born in Indiana where I spent part of my childhood. My mom, dad and I moved to Rich Valley, Virginia while I was still in elementary school. I remained in Virginia until I graduated from Northwood High School and headed off to college. I began my college years at Milligan College in Elizabethton, TN and played on the golf team. I enjoyed a year at Milligan, but decided King University would better meet my needs as a college student; therefore, I changed universities and pursued my degree at King University in Physical Education. I graduated in December 2014 and have worked at Lowe’s Home Improvement while looking for a job in my field of study. I have been married to my wife Meghan for nearly three years. She has been a strong supporter of me and my dream of becoming a physical education teacher. Outside of my time at school, I enjoy spending time outdoors, working out, playing sports, spending time with my little girl,

For this practicum assignment I chose my co-teacher Scott McCandless. The reason I chose this person to do this assignment is because as a fellow physical educator I have both content and pedagogical knowledge in order to provide an in depth analysis of his teaching. Scott has been teaching physical education for five years and this is his first year at Pleviak. Each class that we teach has anywhere from around thirty-six to fifty-two kindergarten students. Depending on the time we might have a combination of; one class that is a monolingual general education and the other class a bilingual education, or a monolingual general education and a special education class with one teacher assistant for the students who have disabilities.…

Autobiography / teaching philosophy I grew up in a little village about an hour and half North-East of Frankfurt, Germany. Overall I spend a total of 24 years in Germany, attending grades 1 to 13 in the local school system, while graduating high school in 2001. Shortly after, I had to follow the mandatory civil service that was in place at the time; meaning either military service or civil service for a total of 10 months. Even though I decided to attend military service, I later switched towards civil service and completed my mandatory 10 months at a local hospital. In 2005 I started an internship at a travel agency that concluded with a degree as a travel agent.…

Nelson Mandela (2003) has been famously quoted, saying “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” As a teacher, the goal is to help students change the world, or at least change their world. That goal can seem overwhelming, especially considering the number of students most teachers work with throughout their career. As I start my journey to become a Special Education and English as a Second Language teacher, I am striving to discover who I am as a teacher and how I can become the best teacher possible. The question of how to become the type of teacher my students look up to is daunting, yet exhilarating.…
