Every year thousands of students in New Jersey are classified within the Special Education Program in their school districts. In 2013, Point Pleasant Borough classified 451 students for Special Education and Related Services (NJ Department of Education, 2014). According to the New Jersey Department of Education, in 2013, there were 12,031 preschool age children classified for Special Education and Related Services (2014). Lastly, in the State of New Jersey, in the year 2013, 220,253 students were classified. That is approximately 16% of the state (New Jersey Department of Education, 2014). When a student is referred for special education, several steps must be completed in order to find the student eligible in the State of New Jersey. Special Education services are offered through the school district to students ranging from ages three to twenty one. Before the age of three, children can receive Early Intervention Services. Early Intervention services are for infants and toddlers who experience disabilities. When the child is …show more content…
The Child Study Team determines whether a student is eligible for Special Education and Related Services. If the student is eligible, an IEP is developed and implemented based on the individual educational needs of that student. If the IEP is followed by the student’s teachers and therapists, the chances that a student will achieve their goals are increased. Similarly, to any policy, there are positives and negatives to the Special Education Policy. The positive consist of improving a student’s academic experience for their academic future. The negative occurs when the school does not follow the IEP that was implemented specifically for that student. When a school does not follow the IEP, they are putting not only that student in an unsafe position, but the entire school as well. In addition, the student will not achieve academic
