Why Do Students Need Special Education?

For students who are emotionally, physically, socially, or mentally delayed; Special Education programs are used in order for them to be successful in their academics. As a result of the delays these students have, their needs are unable to be met in a standard classroom setting, which is why these different acts have been put in place. The Individuals with Disabilities Act (IDEA) explains that Special Education instruction is an educational program which is specially designed to meet the needs of the particular student, also that services under the IDEA are at no additional cost to the parents of students with disabilities. Once a student is determined to be eligible for these types of services, they are reviewed annually and are given an Individual Educational Plan (IEP), which is a document which has the students set goals which should be achieved, the strategies that will be used and the different support or sources that will be used in order to help the student achieve these set goals (Teach, 2016). Parents need to be aware of the policies of this act, and how it can be used to better enhance their child’s education. As educators, it is important to understand the protocol and how to implement an IEP for students with disabilities. More importantly, I was able to gain an insight on the different struggles that parents may face when their special needs student is a part of a general education classroom. There is an extra weight put on the teachers when having special needs students in a general education setting as well. This video identified just how much the role of parents is essential for students, and how important it is in order to have an effective collaboration effort with the teachers and the school. The role of the parent is to be an advocate for the student. There are many reasons why parents are expected to be so indulged in the educational process of their child.
