I did not choose Special Education. It chose me! I relocated to Texas with my family a little more than four years ago. The school that I wanted my daughters to attend could not enroll them since we did not live in their district. The only way for them to get in that school was if I worked for the school district. There was one para-professional job opening that I could apply for and it was for a special needs classroom. I was interviewed and hired within two weeks of my relocating to Texas. I have not looked back since then. I am now in my 5th year working with special needs students.
Before joining the school district, my experience with children was with toddlers to pre-kindergarteners as I owned a pre-school in Florida for eight years. I had limited experience with school age

Once I obtained that degree, I decided to continue and work for my bachelor’s degree. Two years ago I transferred to the University of Iowa as an undergraduate. My degree will be a Bachelor in Liberal Studies with emphasis in Human Relations. I am currently in my final semester and will graduate in December, 2016. After my graduation I will take the Alternative Teacher Certification exams for the state of Texas, and my goal is to work as a lead teacher in a special education classroom. Some of the courses that I have taken in the past year have perked my interest in this field. I have become more aware of how each state has their own rules and regulations when it comes to special education programs. Some of the courses that have been valuable to my education are: Foundation for Special Education, Human Relations, Social Problems, Developmental Psychology, Human Behavior in the Social Environment, Positive Psychology, and Parent-Child Relationships. These courses have given me a deeper understanding of my current job and further strengthened my belief in pursuing my education in special

In order for a child to be identified as requiring special education, a parent or teacher will need to submit a formal referral showing efforts for unsuccessful interventions. Before a child is placed in a special education program, five implications must be meet by the school. First it must be free and meet state standards. Secondly, the student must be appropriately evaluated.…

I was a volunteer counselor at the Down Syndrome Camp. This camp has completely changed my life and also affirmed for me that special education, and working with the special education community, is something that I want to pursue as a career. Also over the summer, I worked as a PAC (personal care assistant) for two adults with HFA (High Functioning Autism). Working as a PAC not only gave me the amazing experience of how to work with adults with HFA, but allowed me to make great connections with them and their families. I got to learn about the special education from the family’s point of view, which I think is a very important perspective to learn as a future special educator.…

Special education is in every school system to help students with disabilities have success in life. According to Artiles and colleagues research, children back in the 1800s were excluded from educational opportunities (Artiles, Harris-Murri, and Rostenberg, 2006, p. 260). Children with disabilities were often segregated into either a separate classroom or separate schools with curriculum that didn’t fit their needs (Artiles, 2006, p. 260). Children were held to low standards, but fortunately that is not the way we see special education today. With the introduction of the Individual with Disabilities Education Act otherwise known in IDEA in 2004 we see more of a movement towards inclusion (Department of Education, 2004).…

The ongoing problem that the Special Education department has faced is staffing enough teachers to accommodate a child with a disability. Many schools lack funding or may be in a low income area that is plagued with poverty and this discourages opportunities for teaching positions to be filled. The school systems are overburdened and children are lost through the laws and guidelines that have been put in place (Mason& Williams…

Before taking this course and being out in the field for 20 hours, special education was not my ideal teaching job. Special education was always intimidating to me because there is so much important information that is needed. IEP’s, parents, and goal setting are just a few to name that intimidated me until now. After getting to experience being in a special education room with the students and asking Nicole Degroot questions about these topics, I now I feel that special education may be the positon for me. From the first day of my observation hours, Mrs. Degroot made me feel completely welcome and comfortable, which made the experience that much better.…
