Growing up at a young age, I was unaware that my mom had a disability seeing that I did not know any different; in my eyes, she was simply my mom. I became her interpreter, point of reference, an outlet for her frustrations, and most importantly, her ears. My mother is Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH). Because of this, I was given and taught the value of patience and compassion. As a result, it further developed the idea that teaching, amongst various student populations, would be my chosen profession. In addition, I obtained a Bachelor’s specifically in Urban Learning at a university to advance my knowledge of Special Education, underserved communities, and diverse cultures. Not only that, it prepared me to instruct in settings with distinct challenges, in particular, overcrowded schools, student transience, and insufficient resources. The education imparted on me also presented unique opportunities for cultural connections, the utilization of up-to-date technology, and creative assets. …show more content…
For that reason, I became an Instructional Aide/Health O.H. for a school district. This presented ideal opportunities for me to collaborate with numerous teachers and other staff on providing support and enhancing the learning outcomes of their students. Also, it contributed to my knowledge of Special Education and orthopedically handicapped students. In addition, it gave me necessary hands-on experience which included feeding, restroom assistance, and guidance strategies on assignments. Each day is never the same, but watching genuine happiness and excitement coming from our students’ faces on top of accomplishing the smallest of goals, has solidified my decision of pursuing this

I have wanted to become an Occupational Therapy Assistant since I was in 7th grade. The school I went to housed all of the special needs children for the county. I grew up with these children in my classes and always wanted them to know that just because they have the label special needs does not mean that they are different from anybody else. I watched an OTA come to school everyday and work with these children to help them write better and kick a ball so they could go to P.E. with us. I thought to myself what an amazing job opportunity this would be to let people know that they can do anything they set their mind to.…

When observing a special education classroom I am not only observing the class, but I am observing a glimpse into my future as a teacher. I was privileged enough to observe a multi-needs intermediate classroom with students who range from eight to ten year olds at Hope D. Wall School who have moderate to server learning disorders and physical handicaps. The purpose of the multi-need classroom is for the teacher to assess which path the student will take after the year is over. For an example some students might need more intensive guidance during their education, while other students attend life skills classes in order to prepare for life outside of school. While I was observing the class, I was fortunate enough to witness the students participate…

Many students with disabilities are mistreated based on things beyond their disorders. Both Catherine A O’Brien and Peggy Placier wanted to study and analyze an important part of social justice approaches to schooling. The study was investigating the struggle that many minority students faced based on their racial, ethnic, and linguistics in deaf residential schools. Through extensive research both O’Brien and Placier decide to further understand and explain the many discourses about students in a state-run residential school for the Deaf based on the deficit-difference dichotomy created by Foley, which serves “as an explanation for failures in school and life, was first based on genetics and then later linked to the anthropological theory…

I started out as an intern to the physical therapist aide, which included preparing equipment for patients with special needs or disabilities and perform other duties, such as maintenance of ice/hot packs and the equipment required for treatments. After about a month, the head physical therapist asked me to transition to a physical therapist aide. I was excited about the transition, because it is my passion to assist patients. During each shift, I spent six hours assisting approximately 15 patients in their treatments and answering any questions related to their treatments. As an intern, I initially took the initiative to talk to patients and sympathized with their condition.…

I believe everyone deserves the chance to live life to the fullest extent. This includes being able to complete simple everyday tasks we rely on. Sometimes we don’t realize that the simplest everyday tasks can be so hard to do with a disability or even just of old age. It is so important for us to not take these everyday tasks for granted before we have to rely on others. I was immediately drawn to the Occupation Therapy Assistant program because I want to make a difference in the world and help people live a fulfilling life and yet still remain independent.…

Occupational therapy enables people to live life to its fullest, no matter their age, history, or limitations. I find that really empowering because as an occupational therapist I can help someone achieve their goals, whether it is as simple as buttoning their shirt or as important as living on their own. The impact I have on their life is an enormous responsibility, but the outcome makes it all worthwhile. Seeing that smile on their face when they accomplish a certain task after the countless struggles and setbacks they have endured is the greatest reward of all. Furthermore, helping them fills me with immense pride and gratitude because I know I have truly made a positive difference in their life.…

A teacher’s goal is to maximize his or her student’s potential. Traditionally, the biggest challenge for students with disabilities was to meet their needs in the areas of social, behavioral, cognitive, perceptive and motor skills (Adebisi et al. 14). A learning disability is defined by the Schwab Foundation as a person who is diagnosed by a professional with a difficulty as a result of a CNS dysfunction in the areas or reading, writing, math, science, reasoning speaking, or listening. In order to meet the diverse needs of these students, they were traditionally removed from the mainstream classroom and placed in a separate classroom to learn. Although this was the best way to meet the students’ academic needs, their social needs were grossly…

As a future educator, I have an obligation to cultivate interdependent relationships between my students and me. The students’ values, cultures and stories should be an emphasized component in this relationship. I am excited about the opportunity to participate in the English Teaching Assistant Program Spain, as it will allow me to develop ways to foster a greater capacity to connect with the students of my classroom with a Hispanic background. Rockefeller was a supporter of this principle saying, “in order to appreciate cultures of another nation, one needs to go there, know the people and mingle with the culture of that country”. I believe going to the origin of the language and culture will better allow me to master the necessary language skills that in turn will benefit these students as well as my future students.…
