With being a nursing student, taking a special education class was something that never crossed my mind. As I came to the realization that I needed an extra elective my roommate suggested I take intro to special education. It has ended up being one of my favorite classes thus far. From learning different learning disability’s that students can have to IEP’s to accepting what autism actually is, it gave me an understanding that there is more to special education then just knowing that someone is considered “special.” With taking this class I have learned more than I ever thought; however, I learned the most just by doing my five hours of observations of an actually special education class. I was surprised to find out that each lesson was taught to the entire class and it was not really individualized. Also two of the girls in the class were high functioning and were able to attend different subjects in the general education classes. The first subject that I observed was English. The lesson was presented to the students on the smartboard that was in the classroom. Mr. English started off by giving the students an audiobook to listen to. After that, the students had to answer questions about the book on the smartboard. If they got it wrong they would have to continue to answer it until they got it right. Afterwards a video was presented to summarize what the book was about. She then presented a game on the smartboard to get all the students involved. Following all of that, the students were then given a worksheet with the same questions on it and had to answer it on the paper. That way the students where exposed to all forms of media. It also gave the students the ability to have all different teaching styles so they did not just get one style. They got visual learning, auditory learning, and hands-on learning. Once the English lesson was finished the students had the recycling job to do. It was cool to go around the school and help the students as they collected all the recycling papers from the different classrooms. The special education

Since the curriculum I use falls under the cooperative learning model, how I assess my students as individuals is important. One way I assess students before a quiz or test is through a website called KAHOOT.IT. KAHOOT.IT is an interactive website that makes learning fun and allows teachers and students to see what topics need to be reviewed. As a teacher it is easy to create a quiz for your class or even pick one of the thousands of public quizzes or surveys. Once I have created a quiz, I can share a game pin with my students who will then create a nickname and be ready to play.…

Most of the classrooms had one reading center that included a stereo system and bulky headphones. The teacher would place us in groups of four in which we were required to listen to an audio recording of a story and follow along with the book. The reading center was the primary reading source in the classroom when it was not out of order. Occasionally, the teacher would read the weekly story aloud to the class. On a weekly basis, the class would visit the library where we…

During independent reading time, some students chose to read electronically. The books the students were reading were levelled readers from a program the teacher was using called Raz-Kids. The program was interactive and had end of reading quizzes, modeled read aloud sections to aid students with fluency and the ability for the teacher to create a running record assessment. The teacher did acknowledge that while the students enjoyed using the program, the text material was not always of the best quality, a point that needs to be considered seriously before allowing a program such as this.…

Every time the teacher did a lesson or read a book at story, she always asked questions, before, during and after the lesson was done, to help the students understand better, especially the ones who were having difficulty understanding the lesson or book they were reading that day. This classroom focused more on informal assessments. The teachers asked teacher-directed questions before she started to do something. One informal assessment that was used in the classroom, I was observing was having the children working in small groups with the teachers. When I was there the one teacher was working on the alphabet with three children and they were using alphabet magnets to help the students with their letters.…

Mrs. Cooper went on to explain, that as a class they would be working on using buttons and flash cards. She had one student from each group come to the front of the classroom and get a bag of buttons and a pile of flashcards and return quietly to their seats. She encouraged the students to open the bag of buttons and to play with them for a brief period of time. She told me this was to help with fewer distractions later in the lesson. Furthermore, she explained to me that whenever you introduce a manipulative as part of a lesson plan to let the children play with it…
