Affirmative action is needed because racism is still an issue, unemployment is significantly higher among minority races, standardized tests are unfair, many come from impoverished backgrounds, diversity increases, the economy is benefited, and the healthcare system is advanced. To some individuals, the words “special considerations” carry a negative connotation. “Special”, defined as distinguished or important, and “considerations”, defined as higher regard, is typically what we think of as treating minorities in a “higher regard because they are more important”. Special considerations need to cease to have this reputation. Now, if you are not already, I want you to think of yourself as a minority. You feel the same, you just have a different skin tone, customs, and/or social relations. Now think of being harassed and struggling to thrive in your educational quests simply because you look and act a certain way that is different from your white peers. How does it feel? These feelings of condemnation and insignificance are not what America stands for or believes in. Let us strive to eliminate racism once and for all; but, until this glorious day comes, for the reasons and arguments identified above, we must help the persecuted.
