Special Classroom Narrative

In my senior year of high school, I signed up to tutor for a special education class. I walked into a foreign classroom in a part of the building I never knew existed. Doubt clouding my mind, nerves at an all-time high, my body; shaking as if I were in the middle of an earthquake- Should I have signed up for this? What if I’m not good with special education children? I wipe my clammy hands on my worn-down jeans, and hesitantly open the squeaky classroom door. I am stunned with noises flying at me. Inside this intimidating classroom was a class of young students who already knew my name, incredibly eager to meet me. Little did I know, this would form the beginning of my journey as a special education teacher. I take a deep breath, smile, and introduce myself to the class, still nervous as can be. The students greet me, letting their quirky admirable personalities shine. As I scan the classroom, I noticed one lanky, tall, blonde, blue-eyed boy sulking in the very back. He twiddles his thumbs, intently focused on anything that couldn’t make eye contact with him. I try to speak with him, “Hello, my name is Angel. …show more content…
Jacob has a unique sense of humor, which he shares with very few people. He leaned in to tell me a joke, and his voice was loud and confident. The students surrounding us heard his joke and started to laugh. “You’re so funny, Jacob!” some of the kids exclaimed. I glanced at Jacob, seeing his eyebrows furrow in confusion. “Your friends liked your joke! Why don’t you share some of your others?” I explained. Tears start to well up in his eyes, and I smile at him to reassure him that it is okay to talk to his peers. Unexpectedly, he wraps his arms around me and whispers, “Thank you” in my ear. This was the last thing he ever needed to whisper to me; he started to entertain the class with his quirky sense of

From my personal experience, when I was in elementary school I remember my teacher would let us sit on yoga ball it always helped me concentrate and it helped me when I was really active because I could not move around, it will make me fall if I move around. I like the idea of standing desks because I prefer standing a lot but when I need to I could sit down on the tool, but I could still move my legs around and be somewhat active. So if one day you're feeling antsy you can just stand. Also I think if your tired it could help you stay awake. Mark Benden also states that sitting desk can cause kids to be obese, he also says that too much sitting is bad for your health.…

Instead of jumping to the thought of special educational services to help the student communicate and become involved, the teacher uses her already-in-motion classroom techniques of student storytellers and positive correction to help Jason feel comfortable interacting with his fellow students. As the book goes on, we can see multiple students as storytellers and see how their stories develop both negative and positive perspectives of Jason and his disability based on Jason’s response to his classmates. We are able to see how the class’ stories change their viewpoints of Jason as he comes more and more involved and successfully integrated within the…

My classroom procedures are very clear, which the class has become familiar with over the semester. Students are to come in from their special class and grab their materials and go sit on the carpet and get ready for math to begin. These are expectations that should be memorized by now. Many of them do this and it contributes to the flow of the classroom and the engagement level of the entire groups. Students are expected to pay attention to the speaker during the mini-lesson by facing their way and not playing with any other items.…

I went from an exceptional student to one who talks back. Since freshman year Mrs. R had been my favorite teacher, even though I did not have her until I was a junior. She was kind and always there if you needed to take a breather in her class, or simply do whatever you needed to on the computer, if it was your lunch. I've heard students complain about how they did not like her and how annoying she was. However, I couldn't understand why they felt that way about Mrs. R. I never saw her the way they did.…

“Don’t forget, the paper is due next Wednesday!” My 8th period teacher, Mrs. Oakford told to my class and I as we streamed out of the cramped classroom on a Friday. We couldn’t wait to bust out of the schools doors and claim our prize of a short freedom for surviving another busy, exhausting, and slow week of middle school. I rushed to my locker, grabbed everything I would need for the homework due Monday, threw it in my bag and headed down the hall collecting my friends to walk to town to start what I would hope would be a slow but fun weekend off The weekend went quicker than I wished and before I knew it, it was late Sunday night and I still hadn’t done my homework, I realized this and got to work.…

September 6, 2016. It was my first day at Rogers High School. My heart pounded as I drove into the parking lot and picked a spot in the very back, making sure not to steal anyone’s regular spot. I tightly gripped my schedule as I slung my backpack over my shoulder. I glanced towards the front door, chewing on the corner of my lip as I made my way over.…

One evening after I had gotten off work, one of my roommates, Natalie, and I hiked our way to the Orchard Lodge where they were having a Resident Assistant event which was decorating recycling bins for our own individual apartments. The RAs who put on events for all of the lodges spend a lot of time preparing for the event and it means a lot to them when students attend and enjoy the time spent at the event. The resident assistant for Orchard, Jenna Bieker, who was hosting the event, was very intergenic and so happy to see all of the people who showed up for the event (it was mostly girls, of course) because she said it was extremely important to her because she has a passion about getting people together and interacting, as well as a passion for recycling. My roommates and I are also avid recyclers so we figured it would be a fun idea to decorate a cute bin for our apartment.…

The cozy bubble that encompassed my life popped in an instant when I transferred to middle school. For instance, the social expectations and the need to make friends consumed the people that used to be my friends and changed them completely. Several students always believed that self-worth came with the people that surrounded them. Other people that wanted some alone time instantly turned strange in others eyes. The flow of middle school life easily changed any type of person, but I tried to go against it with my will in a futile struggle of “good” and “evil”.…

I began my first day of tutoring at Sankofa Academy, a poorly funded elementary school in Berkeley, California, on September 20, 2015. I was enthusiastic and interested in the students that I would be tutoring. Each one was in the tutoring program due to very poor academic performances, and it would be my job to catch them up. By March 2016, it was clear to me that nearly all of my students were male, had some form of an Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), and had frequently found themselves in trouble for misbehavior.…

The classroom environment is an essential and effective instructional tool. If the classroom resources are arranged in the manner in which students learn and develop it will certainly support active learning. My preschool classroom is set up in a manner that will assist me in promoting literacy effectively throughout each of the learning areas. Within each of the areas there are bookshelves that contain a variety of reading materials, such as read aloud, picture books, story books, recipe books, magazines, genres, and informational context that will capture the interest of the students ( Seefeldt, C., & Galper, A., 2001). Students should have access to interesting materials and books in both online and print.…
