Special Agent Black Research Paper

On March 23, 2016, Special Agent Benjamin R. Black, a railroad police officer from the North Western region of Wisconsin, presented his occupation. Special Agent Black is a Canadian National (CN) Railroad Officer where his duties are to protect the railroads properties and public rail transit. Before the occupation of a railroad officer, Special Agent Black was a DNR for the State of Michigan where he found an opportunity with the CN Railway. One of Special Agent Black’s reasons to why he become a railroad police was because of the benefits. Since railroad police are privately hired by the railroad industries, railroad officers do have the same benefits as other law enforcement officers however, railroad police receive more benefits that appears …show more content…
Besides patrolling railroads, railroad officers do investigate varies crimes such as theft, vandalism, train/vehicle crash, arson, and fatalities. The highest incident involving railroads are related to trespassing and fatalities. Special Agent Black pointed out that one in every three hours, a person gets hit by a train throughout the state. Because people do trespass and horseplay on the tracks, people will often time be hit by a train which result in death. Besides trespassing and fatalities, train/vehicle crashes are the second most occurring incident. One the common reasons to why it occurs is because people fail to obey railroad crossing lights and gates. Typically, people will drive around railroad gates and through flashing lights thinking that they will make it. However, by understanding that trains are traveling at fast speed and the train wheels are driven on top of metal, stopping a train from 100 feet away is nearly impossible. As a result of being unable to stop a train, crashes involving vehicles are the second most occur able incident Overall, I thought Special Agent Black’s presentation was pretty interesting and informational. To get into a railroad police field requires tons of experiences as a prior law enforcement officer and must have a certification in law enforcement. Railroad police appears to beneficial part in law enforcement as their duties are to enforce railroad regulations and full policing

Fall 2015 History is often only taught but never questioned because of the impossibility to change what has already happened. However, Richard White, the author of “Railroaded” does exactly that, questions transcontinental life in the Gilded Age. White is a well-respected historian and professor from Stanford University who, during the 2007-2008 recession, was inspired to write about the strangely-familiar recessions of our nations past. This book provides great insight regarding the idea of railroads and whether or not such an invention was a good and needed advancement at the time. This paper will analytically criticize, praise and discuss Whites argument, effectiveness and credibility of the railroad industry.…

“Tramps, Hobos, Beats and Crusties” There is something romantic about hearing the sound of a train in the distance. It has a way of enticing the imagination--it conjures up sepia images of hardship and freedom, and leaves us with an unexplained longing. It is as if the railroad links us to our country’s past, a nostalgic reminder that some things never change. In 2008 I spent the better part of a year hopping freight and hitchhiking from Maine to Washington. Although I only rode a handful of trains, I learned a great deal about the culture that surrounds train hopping.…

The Transcontinental Railroad, first built in 1829, had a seemingly simple purpose. It provided jobs for over 200,000 people and allowed easy access to expansion westward. Looking at the construction of the railroad through the lense of ‘Manifest Destiny’, the Transcontinental Railroad was a great enterprise into maximizing profits. The negatives of the railroad however, outweigh the supposedly beneficial factors. The Transcontinental Railroad is detrimental to the American society and causes more harm than good.…

Following the Civil War were black codes. In the source which was published in 1906 by Walter Fleming he points out the truth and facts behind black codes. He practically points out how after slavery was abolished at the end of the civil war president Johnson appointed whites in the southern states to create these black codes. They were trying to make it seem as though they were trying to help the freedmen when in fact they were only trying to make sure white supremacy would stay in place. For example he states, “The black codes indicated how the white south would regulate black freedom if given a free hand by the federal government.…

In Railroaded, Richard White tells his version of how the transcontinental railroad affected America after the reconstruction. While it is obvious White has done wide-ranging research on the matter, the book is often tiresome, as he tells again and again of how everyone involved was a greedy crook. White’s goal in the book was to prove that building the Railroad when it was, came at too high a cost. Destroying the economy, corruption, destruction of land, Indians and buffalo was not worth it when it was cheaper to transport and travel on existing modes. Corruption was certainly rampart but it did not start and end with the railroad.…
