My first thought was to reject the idea that morality surrounding marriage and intimacy was dependent of the political climates in Cuba at the time. It's hard for me to wrap my head around the fact that people's values can change based on the government that they under, rather than just sharing different views than their government like what sometimes happens in a democracy. Then I thought that maybe people's views do stay the same, some are just more prominent than others has politics shift. Again, similar to that of how more trump supporters seem to be open about their views now that republicans run the executive and legislative branch. I also wasn't sure if these feelings about being labeled as a pinguero or jinetero changed along with the politics of the country. The race aspect of everything is very important because I feel like many people assume that racial prejudice is predominantly in American history as opposed to world history. Speaking of America, I didn't realize the degree of how much the "western way" of looking at homosexuality, in terms of different identifiers and such, influenced other countries. I always assumed that every country had their own sort of "awakening" on the path towards homosexual acceptance and pride. The sad part was that tourists not only influenced the people of Cuba, but they were treated better than the natives by giving so much value to the dollar. To me, it’s unfathomable that a doctor could make literally about ten times less than someone working with tourists. Not only is that sad, but the saddest part is that the tourists still after making way more money sometimes are unable to make ends meet.
