In Speak there are some very big problems going on in Melinda's life like how when she was just a freshman when she was raped by a senior in her school. Melinda has a very bad outlook on life and does not have any faith in herself to succeed, she doesn't have many friends except for Heather and Rachel but even Melinda says they're not friends (add quote 3) but even though Rachel and melinda have been friends since grade school and she is important to melinda she still would say that they're not friends. On the other hand Heather is a new kid and melinda formed an awkward relationship with her.
