When I think of my Italian heritage, the first place that comes to mind is the Ninth Street Italian Market in Philadelphia. I think of all the different family owned butcher shops, bakeries, specialty cheese shops, restaurants and more that have been in business longer than I have been alive. At one time, this outdoor market was an urban enclave in which mainly Italian and Jewish immigrants worked, lived and raised their families. Today, while this outdoor market has become diversified with people and businesses of many different ethnic backgrounds, the sense of pride remains just the same. In this paper I will talk about the history and location of the Italian Market, as well as the area as an urban enclave.…

The Canal district in Worcester, Massachusetts is most accurately described as emerging. Despite its name, Worcester covered the Blackstone Canal in the late eighteen hundreds according to the Preservation Worcester website (Preservation Worcester). The lacking presence of the physical canal provides a decent metaphor for the status of the neighborhood, an area of the city that is lacking in terms of what it wishes it could be. Gentrification is the process of renewal by bringing in middle and upper middle class tenants and displacing lower class tenants. It is a powerful tool that on one hand is revitalizing neighborhoods that have seen better days but on the other is kicking it’s tenants out of their beloved homes – homes where they built a family and a community.
