Prostitutes were allowed to walk around without a male escort, and were not confined to certain areas of the house like married women were. Not only did they provide sex for their male patrons, but rather an entire entertaining service including food, music, and company. Because the marrying age was so old for Athenian men, they usually turned to slaves or prostitutes if they wanted sex. Prostitution was much more common in Athens than in Sparta--in fact, some say there was no prostitution in Sparta at all.
Though both cities were prominent powers in Ancient Greece, Athens and Sparta operated very differently.
