From an outside perspective looking in, others may not value one boy’s problem at an equal value of another boy’s problem, but nonetheless it is a concern each boy has in his own heart that he wants and will solve. In the beginning of the story, Davis makes it clear to the reader that our four main characters are lost and looking for somewhere to belong after various missteps. For Lorenzo, one of the four main boys, this takes the longest amount of time for him to find and accomplish. Ever since a young age, Lorenzo had constantly been bullied for the large bump on his head. Even when he first joins the community formed by the boys, they’re all wary of him: Oscar doesn’t trust him, Cristian thinks he is an idiot, and Luis does not talk to him (Davis 31). After working together for a while, Lorenzo’s quirky personality starts to rub off on the other boys, and they cannot help but to start liking Lorenzo. It takes a while for Lorenzo to become accepted by his peers, but in the end, it is worth it. This even motivated his father to help get their family across the border, so that could Cristian could find better opportunities in the United States of America. Even after crossing the border, there were still few chances for Cristian to expand on his dream because of issues like there not being enough materials and it was difficult to receive the proper guidance on engineering. Things were looking dull until Carl Hayden Community High School loomed its head. At this place, they offered engineering classes, something that definitely piqued the interest of Cristian, who was struggling to maintain an interest in what his main classes were offering. The robotics team at Carl Hayden provided Cristian, as well as the other boys, a family away from home or in some boys’ cases the family they never had. However, the robotics team gave Cristian more than just a network of people whom he could depend on, it gave him a chance at academic success: a full ride scholarship at Arizona State
