Essay On Spanking

Improved Essays
Behind closed doors Fear is a sign of respect. A step parent to a 14 year old girl has been accused of child abuse. Her actions were not acceptable to him. When he realized she was lying he spanked her with a belt, causing minor bruises. The step parent did not mean to cause any harm just a spank to make her regret lying. Although spanking is a discipline measure, there is several opinions and debates on corporal punishment. Even though people say that spanking is child abuse and can cause harm, spanking should not be referred as child abuse because it is a form of discipline, learning to respect others, and to be prepared for the real world.
There are many people against spanking because they say it is motivated by anger, focuses on the past and makes the child feel guilty. Although, with this statement they are correct, but that is why it should never be done with anger. If you include anger in your parenting it will most likely result in injury (pingleton). Other people always think of spanking being child abuse because they imagine the parents doing it with anger when sometimes that is not the case. Yes I understand many parents do perform child abuse but that is when the child does nothing wrong and the parent just spanks for no reason, which that is child abuse. Another example that shows that many people say that spanking is child abuse and can cause harm is it can cause potential damage if you start using objects to spank. Objects like belts are said to be used when the spanking becomes less effective. Even though it is very hard to leave objects out, you should never use it for spanking. When you spank you should always use your hand and only over clothing. Spanking should be done correctly at all times because it can lead to a bigger situation. “So spanking, when used judiciously, appropriately, and in combination with other disciplinary techniques, can be helpful part of training our children” (pingleton). Even though many people say that spanking is child abuse and can cause harm, spanking should not be referred as child abuse because it is a form of discipline. Sometimes younger kids have a harder time to understand what they are doing wrong (Pingleton). Usually with toddlers you will have to use spanking to show them what they did was not correct. Disciplining your children should be something that you do not need to be afraid of. People have different opinions and that’s okay, they are always going to judge no matter what. Another example that shows that it is a form of discipline is To gain respect from your kids you need to use affective discipline. For example, teenagers like the 14 year old not only know how to act already but do bad on purpose. Teens always want to act like a grown up, they want to be free from their parents, so they do bad behind their parents backs thinking they will not find out. This kind of behavior should not be acceptable it is a sign of immaturity and disrespect. When these actions occur you will have to give them a lesson and talk to them, if they do not understand then use spanking.

Once your children have children of their own they will step into your shoes and see how necessary spanking truly is.

So it is clear that although many people say that spanking is child abuse and can cause harm, spanking should not be referred as child abuse for two main reasons. First, it is a form of discipline. But most importantly, spanking helps kids be prepared for their future.
Since the step parent spanked the 14 year old girl he has a high chance of serving eight to twelve years of jail time, which to me is not fair at all. In this case, the victim did not have any serious injuries. The bruises were temporary, not life threatening, and were not seeking medical attention (Brent). If the victim did not listen to the parent, the parent has every right to educate their kids with a form that will control them from misbehaving. Spanking does not cause any damage to a child if done

The book Why Spanking Doesn’t Work, lists eleven undesirable side effects of spanking their children. The first undesirable side effect is that spanking a child will lower their self-esteem which in turn can send the message that the child is of little value to the parent who spanked them. The next undesirable side effect of spanking is that it will create a display of bad feelings in children which can in turn have a feeling of emotional distress and lower the well-being of the child. A third point of the undesirable side effects of spanking is that it will alienate the child from the parents which cause nervousness and tension when the child is around the parents. Spanking has long been implemented as a form of discipline to correct misbehavior in children. As the proverb goes, “Whoever spares the rod hates their children, but the one who loves their children is careful to discipline them”. While spanking, or more professionally referred to as corporal punishment, has stood as a tried and trusted means of discipline, controversy regarding its integrity, value, and effects has been brought to serious question; and really, this shouldn’t be terribly shocking. The most basic and fundamental aspect of spanking itself is to strike an individual, and this can seem entirely skewed. However, when done in an appropriate manner, corporal punishment ultimately benefits those who receive its brunt in ways that other punishment methods fail to do as effectively.…

Parents have to be cautious when disciplining their children to avoid trouble. Unfortunately, there is not a set behavior that warrants a spanking. Some sources say that it is okay to spank because it aids in building a strong relationship of respect with the parent and child, and it results in well-mannered children and adults. Parents also say that it is normal to spank children and that it is just disciplinary actions (“The Spanking Debate” 1).…

In each family children are raised differently, however, most of the time people raise their children based on the way they were raised.
