Spanking: Relationship Between Children And Parents

Improved Essays
I really liked the way you compared the analogy of a clay artisan and the relationship between children and parents. I agree with you about the fact that spanking can be adopted by the child who has been spanked and repeated this later in his/her own children. I also agree with you that spanking affects child's behavior and social interactions and that spanking should be avoided at all cost.

I think you need to work more in your conclusion to improve your work. A good conclusion should restate your thesis, summarize your main points and leave a final impression on the reader.
In your conclusion, you could restate your thesis by saying that spanking is bad for children because it affects them physically and mentally. You could summarize

Spanking has been an effective way for parents to reprimand their children if they misbehave or act inappropriately. Until recently, spanking has been a culturally acceptable form of punishment for children between the ages of one to five. In fact, 65% of 3-year-old children had been spanked within the last month (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2017). However, many disagree with the idea of spanking their children, due to the fact that it may cause more aggressive behavior. Instead of spanking, people have turned to a warmth parenting style which includes “affection, comfort, concern, nurturance, support, and good old fashioned love (Lee, Altschul, and Gershoff 2018) .”…

When raising a child, it is ultimately the responsibility of the parents to teach their children right from wrong. There are many different methods of disciplining a child. Some are viewed as more “acceptable” than others. Whether parents chose the more “acceptable” method, such as a time out, or the less “acceptable” method of spanking, both are trying to teach discipline. Webster’s dictionary defines spanking as “to strike on the buttocks with an open hand” (O’Callaghan 2).…

The sociologic topic that interests me is the impact of spanking, or corporal punishment, on children. On social media, I continually see people posting a meme that says “My parents spanked me as a child - as a result I now suffer from a psychological condition known as “Respect for Others”.” The meme is usually shared and followed by comments about how true the statement is and how “kids these days” need more spankings. This interests me because I personally think that we cannot predict how a child will react to this type of punishment and that the consequences of this type of punishment vary from child to child. I would like to find the actual consequences of spanking and if I am able to find any evidence that supports spanking as an effective…

This study addresses, how corporal punishment can help shape children into successful adults. Corporal punishment teaches the child self-discipline, because they learn when they commit a negative act or behavior, then they will pay the consequences for that negative act/behavior. When a child is spanked for committing a negative act, they often abstain from committing negative acts in the future. For instance, if a child gets a bad grade in school, then comes home and gets a spanking from his/her parent. They will most likely abstain from getting a bad grade in the future.…
