Failing to clean one’s room isn’t exactly the same thing as cutting a friend’s hair, after all, just as being noisy or a nuisance is not to be equated with playing with the kitchen knife. The punishment should fit the crime so to speak. Timeouts just won’t always do the job. Occasionally it is necessary for a parent to really drive the message home that something is unacceptable, and that is any time a child’s misbehavior endangers themselves or others. I understand how some might reach the misguided conclusion that spanking encourages violence as too often violence does beget violence. However, spanking is not inherently violent, and should be used to punish, discourage, and emphasize the severity of violence in a plain way for children. Spankings come with warnings, explanations, and forgiveness whereas violence is more senseless, retaliatory, or aggressive. Spankings should never be any of those things if implemented properly. Anybody will agree violence is bad and that is exactly why it should not be tolerated from children or be treated too lightly. Mostly, spankings should not be administered with too much force either. The goal isn’t to hurt the child but shock him or her. Having been spanked growing up, I know I have never felt the need or desire to handle my problems with
