In the United States, there are over 231 million people who primarily speak English in their household. That is about 70% of the whole population. Even though that number is so high, only about 26% of adults in the U.S. can hold a conversation in another language. Most of those people who are bilingual are not in the 70% who speak English as a primary language. Because of this, schools have made foreign language classes mandatory, but the main concern is should all the different languages be mandatory, or just one? In the United States, Spanish has been the second most spoken language for a long time, but people should not

While I can see why immigrants should be required to learn English, it is unnecessarily discriminatory to those without access to classes in which to learn it. If we as a country decide to require immigrants to know English, we should also provide free and accessible classes. But since America hates to spend money on anything other than the military, and especially immigrants, I don’t see this happening. Most learn English upon arrival anyway, as…

Throughout history, many have found it hard to believe that the United States of America does not have an official language. When you take a moment to think about it, the United States of America is one of the major centers of commerce and trade, and as a predominately English speaking country, many have always believed that English is the country's official language. Despite many efforts from numerous officials over the years, the United States has no official language. Almost every session of Congress has proposed an amendment to the Constitution to adopt English as the official language of the United States. There has also been other efforts taken to change the U.S. Code to make English the official language.…

A few degrading words that people use when referring to Mexicans are; Wetback, Spic, and Beaner, whether American or not. They also have many stereotypes against them such as lazy, machismos, drunks and many more. One of the main reasons they are discriminated against is because of their illegal immigration into the United States. Mexicans were left no choice but to cross illegally to seek a better life, because of the cost and many obstacles it made it difficult to become a citizen. Often they were forced to work physically demanding jobs for less pay due to non-citizens or lack of options, or because they wanted badly to be part of the U.S and saw themselves to be best off here even if wages were cheaper than back at home.…

All immigrants should be required to learn to read and write English well, so they can have the same opportunities as everyone else. Living in America and not knowing how to speak English causes multiple complications. Some of the complications are not being able to read labels on prescription pills, menus in a restaurant, chemicals in products, and not understanding agreements in renting a house or in preceding surgical procedures. In the article from CNN, Kennedy proclaims, “Learning English shouldn’t be an option for new immigrants – it should be enshrined in the experience of making them Americans” (1). I agree with Kennedy because immigrants come to America for better opportunities, but if immigrants do not know English well then they just moved to America for no apparent reason and cheated themselves of their opportunities.…
