Spanish Reflective Essay

I have learned a lot about how important it is to know basic Spanish when you are pursuing a career in the medical field. It does not matter what area you practice in because at some point in your career you will run into someone who only speaks Spanish and does not understand English. I took four years of Spanish in high school, so most of this information I already knew. There were also things that I needed a refresher on, and that is what this course did for me. Even if I am not fluent in Spanish, I can still understand most of what Spanish speaking people are saying. It gives me confidence when I recognize a word and knows what it means. It also makes me realize that I have learned something very useful in my life. I also know that being able to speak a little bit of some other language other than English gets you noticed more in the working world. It can make you more valuable to the department and a good asset when they need someone to translate for them. After having so many years of Spanish I have come to really enjoying learning the language and their culture. It Spanish speaking country has their own unique way of expressing their feelings. I also found it very interesting knowing that in some countries that a word may mean one thing to this culture, but can mean something completely different in another. Learning Spanish can get confusing and hard, but it is a very important factor in the medical field. I have sometimes thought about what it would be like if I was the patient and nobody knew my language. I would not be able to receive the best medical care possible and they could miss diagnose me.
