Spanish In Middle School

Improved Essays
When I first began learning Spanish in middle school, it was by obligation. At the time, there was no need for me to know any other language beside English. Everyone around me was white, and no one spoke anything other than English. It wasn’t until high school that I realized the power of knowing another language. Speaking another language allows you to communicate with entirely new communities -- to hear their problems and experience their way of life. In recent years, I have found the Spanish language to be particularly useful through service. The past few years, I have been able to utilize Spanish at a christmas toy drive in which I served as a translator for ESL community members who wanted to have gifts for their children. Later, when

It was too boring at the time. But now I can see why my parents always pushed for me to learn Spanish. It allowed me to be much more culturally “sensitive” in a very culturally diverse world. I guess the moral of this story was that if I took up the many opportunities that were present to me when I was young. I would be able to speak to all of my relatives and breeze through those pesky Spanish…

When it came to Spanish I was able to understand it and sort of speak it but I was not able to read or write it, that comes later in my life. A moment in when language (Spanish) really changed a lot in my life was when I got into high school and toke my first Spanish class. This changed a lot in my life because taking this class would help me read and write Spanish while also improving how I pronounced words and spoke so that it would become fluent. As I grew up I did learn more and more at home so speaking Spanish became easier but it still had a lack of fluency.…

I have always been an advocate for young children learning other languages, especially Spanish, because I feel that they will have more career opportunities since they will be able to communicate better with everyone. From the time that my daughter was in kindergarten through third grade, every child had Spanish as an Encore class. Unfortunately, when Congress felt that children were not getting enough physical activity, this class was cut from schools while adding an extra physical education class (this is how I got the job that I teach today).…

Spanish was taught during my Kindergarten year once a week after school. The words we learned during those times have stuck with me through my entire life, yet what I learned when I took Spanish classes in middle school and high school is completely wiped from my memory. My personal experience with learning a new language is why I back up Rich when she discusses the problems with trying to master a language after the age of five. Secondary languages should be taken more seriously by the United States government when deciding what should be taught to all ages in public schools. Other countries have been teaching secondary languages, usually English, for years, yet the United States doesn’t…

I have never contemplated what my life would be like if my first language was not English. What if it were Spanish, German, Dutch , or even Swahili? Taking into consideration that I am African American, I reside in Alabama, and the school that I attend means that by now I would be bilingual. Something about African American people that are bilingual or speak a different language has always astonished me. Having English as my first and only language always seemed highly boring.…

When I was younger, my mother worked as a private interpreter which led us to spend a majority of our summers traveling around Europe. Although I can honestly admit I do not remember much from the foreign locales we visited, I recall vividly how my mother would speak the languages. Yana, my mother, was fluent in Russian, Ukrainian, English, German, Italian, and proficient in both Polish and French. The words slipped off her tongue in the same fluidity and gracefulness of a ballerina on stage and conveyed both emotion and meaning. She knew how to command a language, to mold it to express her ideas, arguments, and affection.…

I decided to take Spanish, because I thought it was going to be super easy. My first language is Spanish, thus I was confident because I have lived in Peru for almost twelve years and I speak Spanish at home. The first week of class was easy for me, but once we started learning about grammar I noticed that I was not good at it. I feel like I am good at speaking in Spanish, because I have to speak Spanish every single day because my mom does not understand English, but I do not have to write in Spanish every single day. I only speak in Spanish at home…

Throughout the two years, my mom had to prepare for the citizenship exam, so she had to study in order to stay in the United States. At the age of 19 (around 1991) she took the exam and passed and became a U.S. citizen, and from there she went to California where she stayed for a few months with my dad and sister. In California, my mom mostly took care of my sister, while my dad was doing agricultural work—mostly working with grapes. My dad had a friend who he met while he was in California that resided in Oroville, Washington who told him there was a lot of work where he was at and he could get them a job if they wanted, so they made the move there and began to work. The reason they moved to Washington was because the California life wasn’t for them; my parents wanted a nicer area where they can raise a family…

As a child, my parents taught me my native language, Spanish, by reading books to me any chance they had. At the age of 8, when I had the opportunity I would bring home a variety of books from school eager to read them and learn new words. I spent a great amount of time reading that I eventually decided to move into short novels. This helped me improve so much that I never had trouble speaking Spanish. I specifically remember in our small class of 15 students, me speaking Spanish more fluently than any of my other classmates, which made me so proud of myself.…
