Cultural Competence History and Background Mark and Louise Zwick founded Casa Juan Diego in 1980. Casa Juan Diego, located in Houston, Texas, provides a safe home for undocumented families that come from all over the world, seeking asylum. Many of these families are escaping from gang, political, and domestic violence and come to Casa Juan Diego in hopes of starting a new life here in the United States. This community filled with undocumented families who are attempting to start over, searching for jobs and a better life here.…
An immigrant boy walks into a village looking for food and shelter to stay in for the night. He starts to ask for food water, the people in the village ignore him; calling him names and stealing what little clothes he has. He leaves the town filled with anger and hatred. A couple years go by and the boy is now an adult and a member of a gang, who steals from immigrants and leaves them brutally beaten. All because the people from the village he visited as a young boy, treated him like a dog begging for food, rather than helping him by accepting him into their community and providing food and shelter.…
One of the main topics was homosexuality. I always knew people in El Colegio were open to this but it felt great to see people talking about it and accepting it. At first we tried different ways you would talk to children about the subject.…
Mi Amigo Luis: Learning English in America Luis Camacho majoring in civil engineering at Saint Martin’s University. He was selected as one of ten for the Benedictine Scholarship program at this University. It is not uncommon to spot Luis roaming down the halls of any dorm on campus singing and strumming his guitar. Welcoming to anyone, Luis’ spirit boomerangs off the walls.…
Fellow students, this is a very exciting proposition for you. The Cornerstone Christian Academy 8th grade class has won a trip. Not just any trip, but an overnight field trip anywhere along the east coast. This could be anywhere from the tip of Maine to the Florida Keys. This is time to rewind, relax, and enjoy ourselves.…
During the imperial period the United States, along with many other European countries rushed to obtain the maximum amount of land possible. Two present day countries President McKinley involved himself in were Cuba and the Philippines. Prior to the Spanish-American war the Spanish controlled both of these countries. Once the United States won the war, they faced the decision of what to do with these newly acquired lands. First, they decided Cuba could have their freedom on the condition that they signed the Teller Amendment.…
We could pick an appropriate Spanish movie that highlights a Spanish-speaking country’s culture to play for not only our members, but also for all Spanish students, even those at the junior highs. This would be an opportunity to promote our club to future members and for students to improve their comprehension skills. The event could take place in the LGI with popcorn or other traditional snacks. Furthermore, I want to establish a more organized system of tutoring that matches a committed Spanish Honor Society member with a Dawson Spanish student. Spanish teachers would tell their classes that if desired, a student could have a SHS tutor.…
In the past few years, I’ve volunteered with a variety of organizations from National Honor Society, National Spanish Honor Society, and Key Club. I have also co-founded a Community Outreach Club at high school. Through the Church I’ve assisted with Vacation Bible School and middle school retreats. One of my favorite memories came from volunteering for the first time with National Spanish Honor Society. Choosing to participate in this program was not a difficult decision, since I knew I wanted to continue practicing my Spanish and volunteer in the community at the same time.…
The Latino genre are books that talk about the Latino community and diversity. It is important for children to read from the Latino genre because it creates awareness in the Latino Culture. It is important for bilingual education because students can learn from both languages. By teaching children authors from this genre, we can better explain how the Latino culture is growing and how it makes up society. When we read to children from Latino Authors we can show children that their lives and related experiences matters.…
Growing up, in a Hispanic home I learned the values of life in a differently with hardship but always maintaining closeness. At home, I was taught that family is the most important thing in life. Even though I was born in the United States, my family taught me how to stay in touch with my Hispanic roots and never be ashamed of my culture. Speaking Spanish is greatly important to me. Because of this, I am able to communicate easily with my family members and the Hispanic community.…
A Non-Traditional Form of Learning How are students affected by cultural experiences offered through Anderson University? One major thing that students gain from immersing themselves in another culture is the ability to apply practical life applications. Perhaps a student has been studying a foreign language and through a Tri-S trip he can practice speaking with other people. For that student, his world opens in a completely new and exciting way. Or another student has a heart for trafficked people and BOUND provides a way for her to reach those in need.…
It was six A.M. and we were all dragging ourselves to get up from the bed. The family and I were heading for Mexico and the plane was to leave at 8:30 a.m. We had packed earlier that week. I was anxious mostly because my father would continuously talk about the dangers of the streets and people.…
In my life, I have been blessed to be healthy, loved, and cared for. I do not consider myself to be in a position to say I have overcome adversity when there are many people that truly have. Nevertheless, I have overcome myself and realized who I am. Growing up, I have been surrounded by two cultures: Puerto Rican and American, my mother being Puerto Rican and my father being Scottish-Irish-American. Yet, I felt ashamed of my Hispanic culture, mostly because people never considered me as Puerto Rican by my physical appearance.…
Before this course, I did not know grammar well, and what I did know I did not fully understand. Yet, due to taking the course, I learned more about the structure of the English language, and can use grammar better than I did before. For instance, the first three major assignments were filled with missing comas, verb-tense misuses, and run-on sentences. Now, I may still make mistakes, but I know why I have made them. In other English courses, I had grammar homework and reading assignments that, often, seemed to be busy work, but with this course, I did not think that was the case.…
There are hundreds of different languages spoken across the globe today. It is interesting to note that the United States, one of the most diverse countries in the world, does not have an official language. While English is what a majority of the American population speaks, it is by no means the only language that can be heard here. In California, specifically Southern California, two of the most widely spoken languages are English and Spanish. Often in the past, scholars as well as regular people, made theories and assumptions regarding languages.…
