Recreation and Pop Culture of Spain Spain is such a diverse country both geographically and culturally. Spain has much different music, clothes, and dances that separate it from the rest of the world. From the annual Bull Run to the Tomatina, there are so many things Spain has to offer to the world. Spain’s national anthem is, “Himno Nacional Espanol” or “Marcha Real”, and it is the only national anthem that has no words. It was used during 1770-1822 and was restored in 1823. The reason why it wasn’t used in 1822 was because the government decided to hold a contest of who could create a new anthem. Fortunately, no one won the contest so they went back to the original. During Spain’s civil war the anthem was replaced with “Himno Riego”.

On October 12th, they celebrate Hispanic Day which is their independence day. This also is the day that Christopher Columbus set sail to the New World. In addition to Good Friday they have Maundy Thursday and Easter Monday. They also celebrate All Saint’s Day on November 1st. Those religious holidays include Assumption Day and Immaculate Conception Day. With Spain being so rich with culture you’d expect it to be filled with great dancing and smooth music, well it is. There are many types of dances in Spain but one of the main dance is the Flamenco. The flamenco dance is thought to have originated in the southern parts of Spain. At first, flamenco was not done with music, it was originally called “toque de palmas” which translates to “touch of palms.” In the dance, there is a male and a female dressed in red, flowing clothes.
