Spain is a country whose culture was created through a fusion of religion and the environment which surrounds the country. In the 21st century, many traditional, local cultures have been lost, overpowered by the combined effects of both a strong central culture and globalism. These two seemingly contradictory terms have managed to coexist, at least for the time being, but that has not been without its tribulations. The folk culture practiced in Spain today includes styles of dance, religious rituals, and many unique holidays. In addition, there is a strong presence of popular culture, especially among the younger generation. This cathedral is just one of many such buildings and churches present throughout Spain. In smaller towns, it is common to see an ornate church at the center, with the rest of the city built around it. The Catholic religion has had a great impact on the cultural landscape of Spain in this way. Popular culture also has a strong influence on the citizens of Spain. One example of pop culture is the large soccer fan base. The picture shown at the right is of the team FC Barcelona. Soccer has become a worldwide event, and each country’s team competes in events such as the FIFA world cup. Through the Roman Empire, Spain was introduced to Christianity for the first time. Centuries later during the time of colonization after the New World was discovered by Europe, Spain was one of the pioneering countries. The country was one of the first to set up colonies throughout the New World, and they brought their culture with them. From the Spanish, Native peoples were introduced to new diseases that decimated them. On a more positive note, the Spanish missionaries also carried the faith with them and imparted their Catholic religion onto the people of North and South America. Today, Spain has managed to stay relatively separated from the rest of Europe due to the eastern barrier of the Pyrenees mountains. The mountains prevent frequent travel, due to the fact that airfare is expensive, and has allowed Spain to avoid much of the placelessness that has come about Europe. However, placelessness is still occurring, especially in major cities such as Madrid. These cities have succumbed to the power of globalization and, due to frequent contact with other countries in the European Union and beyond, they have begun to look more similar to cities worldwide. Madrid still has a unique culture, but it has grown to a large size, and has begun using excessive amounts of electricity. Chain restaurants such as McDonalds have also made their way
