There has been a debate over photo identification when it comes to voting in the United States. In You Decide, we go over two individual’s point of view, Hans von Spakovsky and Shelia Jackson Lee. Spakovsky believes it protects the integrity of elections, while Lee believes it suppresses voter turnout. Hans von Spakovsky immediately defines his argument on photo identification by bullet pointing his reasons for supporting photo IDs, for example, he says it prevents “voting under fictitious voter registrations” and “double voting by individuals registered in more than one state or locality.” (Rourke, pg. 96)…
Many times, especially in science, we distance. Students can not relate long distance, so converting the distance into football fields helps the students grasp the relation. One thing I do struggle with is going very basic with math. Showing students the various ways to work a problem and taking it step by step. I have a certain way that I work math…
In the paper, “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay”, by Marie Foley, it talked about how the five-paragraph essay has changed the minds high school and beginning college students of how useful it it. This paper also talked about relating the five-paragraph essay to a dinosaur. It was saying that the introduction paragraph is the teaching portion/not the “biting” portion. The body paragraphs are the “bulk” of the essay, and the conclusion paragraph is the “tail” of the dinosaur. The paper was also compared to a journey.…
For this week’s lab there were two readings. The first was “Hamilton's rule and kin competition: the Kipsigis case” by Monique Borgerhoff Mulder. The second reading was “To give and to give not: The behavioral ecology of human food transfers” by Michael Gurven. The first reading, discussed how nepotism is shown more often when animals have more resources. This makes sense because if you have no resources, then you have nothing to give through nepotism.…
First, more school hours can overwhelm children. The school day stresses many kids with all the homework and work they have to do. In the article from Scope,by Tod Olson, ”A survey from the American Psychological Association found that during the school year, students stress levels spike. Nearly a third of respondents said they were “overwhelmed” by the pressure (Pg.31). This information from the article shows how kids can get stressed from hours of school so extending them would be an atrocious idea.…
When the competitive gymnast won the title of national champion after all of her hard work, she gave her longtime coach a beatific look. The terrifying behemoth tramped in the direction of the group of tourists as they ran away screaming in horror. In order to persuade her parents to buy her a car, she washed the dishes, walked to school, and took care of her siblings as blandishment.…
Within Colombo’s Rereading America, an emphasis is placed upon an need to “reread (re-evaluate) commonplace ideas.” In this case, that topic is regarding the model American family as perceived from before and now. This essay will discuss specific topics such as that of media influences, job rationales, and same-sex marriage alongside comparing the views as described from within the book to our modern day views. The first article present within the reading was a narrative called “Looking for Work” from the perspective of a nine-year-old Mexican-American boy. Attracted to the family life as depicted on television, he sees his own family as being rather disorganized and less-than-optimal.…
Jayson’s article for usatoday.com is entitled “Who’s feeling stressed? Young adults, new survey shows.” In this article, Jayson details a variety of reasons cited by millenials for why they feel stressed by their current living circumstances. These reasons, of course, are primarily economic. And the effects of economic struggle for millenials, particularly those in their post-college years, are dovetailed by still other psychological effects (e.g. extreme anxiety or depression), stemming from the socio-economic circumstances in which they find themselves; where they had been promised a career and stability for all their hard work in school but find no employment in a broken economy; where they feel tremendous pressure to succeed and ‘make…
As the author goes on throughout this article, he begins with basically stating that prison for poor people, and more specifically, poor black men, is just their ordinary life. He then compares this to privileged white men in college. Then he continues on the mass incarceration on a scale almost unexampled in human history is a fundamental fact of our country today, where he then states or tries to relate it to the slavery fundamentals from 1850. The author states that there is now over six million people under “correctional supervision” in America. The estimated amount of people in these facilities is just as startling as the people already in there.…
The Perfect Paragraph Fifteen Kisteesha from Whitefish, Mt with dreadlocks got expelled for having dreadlocks. The superintendent told her that she was not allowed back until she did something about it due to the distraction. I’d tell them then send the people with artificial hair color home as well because that’s distracting, and the people that have interesting smells, and the greasy hair look… Because honestly you really can’t focus with someone that is sitting by you with a bright hair color or a smelly smell. I think they’re overstepping it because in a way they’re taking her education away, and saying she has to change herself in order to be “normal” to come back and attend their school. They’re also making her become someone that…
Body Paragraphs When I was in 5th grade, my mom took away my Xbox controllers and handheld gaming devices in a bag and then hid them because she was managing how much I played. Every day, or at least when I played, my mom would take them and put them in a bag after I had played enough for the time. I remember that when she did this it bugged me, and I sought for a way to pay on my handheld devices whenever I wanted since they were small and portable. I thought and I thought until a light bulb gleamed in my head. I had figured it out.…
Reading and writing have been passions of mine since the moment I first learned to read. I grew up reading all the time and writing fun stories, whether it be on a computer or paper with a pencil. Getting lost in worlds of adventure across fantasy and history continues to bring joy into my life, which is found in both reading and writing. A few years ago, I decided that I wanted to start writing a book with the intent of trying to get it published. While I had an idea in mind with much of the plot and characters detailed out, the process never truly began or continued.…
In this paragraph, I used context clues and connotations in many different ways. One way I connotation was in this sentence “Can it be long before the film rights to the triumph-over-adversity story are snapped up, and William Kamkwamba, the boy who dared to dream, finds himself on the big screen?” This sentence uses connotation because you can tell the tone that was set for the sentence is victorious. It is a heroic moment that is happening and William Kamkwamba is being praised for what he did. With context clues I was able to break down some of the parts in the article which I did not understand.…
Through the already in place seating plan, which saw the easily distracted students at the front of the classroom and continued walking through the class; I was able to defuse an issue before it started (Kramer, & Kovarik, 2013 p. 200). Although, there were many positive aspects of the lesson, the pacing of the lesson resulted in me rushing through the class. This is something that I have addressed now addressed in my lesson plan and is now highlighted in red. As the activity was going to stretch over multiple lessons, I should have slowed my pace down and allowed a proper conclusion before the end of class. This aspect of my lesson plan is what reflected on the application the most, as it saw me rush through early…
In addition, testing can provide the child with a challenge, which can boost performance and learning. Distributing and interleaving practice We all know the value in the saying, “Practice makes perfect”. When it comes to learning techniques, practice and repetition can be extremely useful. But instead of having the kids solve a single issue before moving to another, the practice should be used in distributive and interleaving manner. What this means is that a single problem is scattered across a short period of time, with different problems scattered across the session.…
