Space programs employ perhaps some of the smartest people that have ever lived. The application of physics, calculus, chemistry, biology and other sciences make this a very complicated subject. There are many companies which have some involvement with space. NASA, the most well-known, is a government run and funded operation. It has been the most successful in its 50+ years of existence. SpaceX is the most popular space company right now. NASA doesn’t launch any piloted missions currently, it only supplies and satellites. The purpose of these expeditions was to launch and service satellites (“Space Shuttle Era”). Inventions due to the initiation of the space program start to appear in civilian life . Satellite TV also was invented. Satellites were needed to communicate with the crew when they were off of Earth. The technology used for the radio communication was later reinvented to accommodate television signals and radio signals for earth use. Even laptops were invented for the space programs. A small, light, and portable solution was needed to be housed in the small living space of a space craft. The Space Shuttle really affected humanity because it provided a GPS signal to most places on Earth. Google Maps also started. A world where using a physical map to navigate no longer exists. Society would not be able to get turn-by-turn directions whenever they want it. Being the closest planet to Earth, mankind has a burning curiosity to get to Mars. Mars can teach us history about the universe, and how the Earth was formed. Some may ask why this is important. If discoveries such as new elements are on Mars, maybe the chemical formula of those substances can hold a cure for cancer, or maybe a way to reproduce an organism. Learning how to grow plants in in hostile environments is really important because each day humans pollute more and more, soon, the earth won’t give much back in terms of life. Traveling to Mars does present a large problem; energy. Batteries and solar power are going to be a necessity on Mars. This will in turn help the earth tremendously. Batteries get better and better every day, but stored energy seems to a very large problem. It is important we learn how to take the almost infinite energy the sun provides and turn that into energy mankind can use.
