I believe that engineering the tools of scientific discovery will lead to the most important breakthroughs of the 21st century, especially when it comes to what we know about space. NASA is currently on track for an asteroid redirect mission and a Mars mission set to take place in the next 30 years. In addition to these two examples, there are many more missions being planned …show more content…
Material science engineers are essential to the design of new rockets and technology that makes them function. One of the most impressive things that they have developed are silicon ceramic tiles that cover the outside of rockets so that they don't burn up when reentering the atmosphere. Another big contribution by material science engineers is more efficient solar panels to power spacecraft during long missions. These improvements made possible by material science engineering will lead to new breakthroughs in space exploration by making spacecraft better and more …show more content…
Earlier space missions required computing more computing power than ever before, leading to huge breakthroughs in circuitry and microprocessing. With faster computers and circuitry it was possible to control rockets electronically and make precise calculations for space missions. Outside of space exploration, these developments in computing eventually worked their way into consumer level products and are the basis of the computers we use today. Computer and electrical engineering for the development of tools of scientific discovery has led to breakthroughs in both space exploration and in consumer
