What do the co-founder of Google, Larry Page, billionaire businessman Eric Schmidt, and Oscar winning director, James Cameron have in common? They are all major investors in the asteroid mining company, Planetary Resources and advocates of space colonization and exploration. Elon Musk, the real life Tony Stark and Richard Branson are founders of spacecraft and spaceflight companies, Space X and Virgin Galactic. Recently, Musk announced Space X would be sending up manned Mars missions by 2026. Now as the technology to make faster and more powerful spacecrafts is progressing, the venture is becoming more and more of a reality. The path is clear; the future is in space exploration and colonization.
The depletion of resources and global warming are impending problems space colonization can provide a solution for. In less than 100 years, the UN predicts the world population will almost double the seven billion people that reside on Earth today(Kunzig). This exponential increase in population will be detrimental to our food supply. Currently, 795 million people suffer from malnutrition. With many families suffering from malnutrition today, we can predict in a hundred years widespread death and even higher percentages of malnutrition will result from the skyrocketing population rates. Based on the State of the World graph, population will peak around 2020, and result in the exponential decrease of food. Following the decrease of food will be the death of many -the decrease of population. No matter how sophisticated technology is in its attempt to feed more people, the demand of food will be too high and the only long term solution to this problem is to find another planet that sustains human life. Space colonization would would be far greater than the moon landing. Imagine living on a planet light years away. To just get there, we would need an engine able to harness an unimaginable amount of energy, radiation shields, a spacecraft able to create a biosphere to sustain crop growth, and a way to recycle water. We would live in a world with a plethora of innovation. Currently, America leads in colonization efforts. Colonizing space would be the achievement of humankind -led by the US.
