Space And Space In Nacirema

Experiences of the human race are geographically different for each being since time and space is continually different at each moment of our lives. Each an every single one of us is different by gender, class, race, religion, nationality, age, ethnicity, and etc. but we all are connected through time and space. Doreen Massey states in her podcast that “space is a cut through the myriad stories” which space and time become connected creating a concept called the power of geometry of time-space compression. With my experiences of the local world culture events, culture and geography helped comprehend the relations between cultural norms, space, and power through artwork and story of one person’s life.

We obsess over our beauty and our outward appearance and it is quite true. We see that in our society, and I seen that in the film “Ode to my Father” where the main characters sister is obsessed with her self and her outward appearance. I also seen obsession in the artwork from the Pizzuti Collection, where people are obsessed with the beautiful colors, the uniqueness in the art and just the artwork on the canvas itself. In America, the depiction of Nacirema ideology is seen everywhere you go. It is not only in one culture, but it is across globally where the world shares one common ideology. It is a cultural normality to wake up everyday and spend hours in the “shrine”. Our “rituals” and our “ceremonies” are accepted into our cultural norm because it is what we do as Americans. Americans share this cultural norm with other parts of the world, because we as humans are social interconnected with each other, which help us create our culture. Without our global culture, we would not have a norm to …show more content…
Experiencing the two different cultures shows the dynamics of space in the two cultures. As Massey explains in her podcast of how space is where we create our myriad stories, I definitely experienced a beautifully told story in the film, “Ode to my Father”. As the main character journeys throughout his life, he meets people in the middle of their stories, and where he creates a social connection between spaces. The geographical identity of people is what creates people’s stories as they share their lives with people in “space”. For example, when the main character in the movie leaves to work in Germany, he meets a beautiful girl, which later becomes his wife. This shows an example of social interaction between spaces. We can also see this in the artwork, where the artist portrays space between the different portraits of the people. In order to paint these portraits, the artist had to experience different cultures in different geographic

Throughout my studies of chapter 4 unit 1 in the textbook titled, “Geography” by Holt McDougal I have obtained a wide amount of knowledge of how physical geography has had an impact on human history. Culture, religion, politics, and societies are some of the prime examples of what aspects of human life were affected. I have also obtained information about other subjects like the origin of man and the affect of agriculture through packets, worksheets, and videos like, “The Journey of Man” by Spencer Wells. All listed information pertaining to physical geography provides information contributing to the idea of how physical geography has affected humans. To a great portion of geographers, claiming that physical geography has had a huge impact on human history would be more than just an understatement.…

Every culture throughout the world has a different perception of what beauty. Some cultures, such as the African American culture for example, express beauty by showing off wealth and expensive features. In an image captured by C.E. Gomes, there is a Swahili woman posing gracefully with several extravagant accessories, such as multiple necklaces around the neck of the woman, along with a bracelet on each of the woman’s wrists. The clothing style of the Swahili woman is very elegant, with intricate designs and patterns displayed both on the dress and on the headpiece, which completely hides her hair. (C.E. Gomes, 1900)…

In McClay and McAllister’s Why Place Matters they argue that space isn’t as important to society or individuals due to globalization. Globalization happened because of the technological advances of communication and transportation making it easy to move people, products, and ideas. They claim that place is an important aspect to us as individuals because we risk forfeiting the reality of embodiment. We risk the basis for healthy and resilient individual identity. The preconditions for cultivating of people’s virtues is also at risk.…

It is well known that Western culture and the Western world has endeavored to assert itself over other cultures for many centuries. Beginning with the colonization of groups of people deemed lesser by the standards of white Europeans, who often forced their customs or religion on people they had colonized, Western civilizations continue to push their cultural standards on other parts of the world, especially when it pertains to art. In the essay, “The Trouble with the Term Art”, Carolyn Dean raises questions about the overwhelming western standard of art, and how different cultures have different views of aesthetic beauty. The central argument of Dean’s essay is that the normal definition of art has been skewed to only include the values of Western society.…

Cultural geography’s philosophy is the belief that humans are not merely products of their surrounding environments but, rather that nature provides possibilities and humans would use them according to their traditions, culture and stage of development. This paper explores the cultural geography view of Sauer (1925) in conjunction with articles of Kniffen (1935), Trewartha (1932), Brown (1933) and MacDougal (1912) to explain the relationship between humans and their environment with approach other than environmental determinism. In Saucer’s (1925) article “The morphology of landscape” he discussed various aspects of geography, mentioning three distinct fields, namely “study of the earth as the medium of physical processes”, tropisms studies and the study of various life-forms and their spatial distribution. He suggests that geography took on the role of investigating landscapes because there…
