The Secession In Ukraine

Ukraine should be able to do what they want since they are no longer in the Soviet Union and are their own country, not Russia’s. Ukraine has been split in half by the Russia conflict, Donetsk and Luhansk want to secede since they are pro-Russian, but by international law will they even be recognized? The law of self-determination says “A people may qualify for self-determination and seek independence or a merger with another state if it constitutes the entire population residing within the internationally recognized borders of a territory, over which no other state exercises legitimate sovereignty”(Shany). This set a precedent of allowing parts of countries to secede because of government unrest in the country of Serbia where Yugoslavia and Serbia were at war for ethnic tension between both, and Kosovo tried to leave to escape damage. There needs to be a just reason for secession from a country, or could undermine both sides on the issues so everyone involved is hurt in a way. Secession even though should be up to the people who want to leave, is slowed down by the international community because they see what it does. It can help separate groups to better themselves, but economically the strengths of each build each other up such as the south and north in U.S during the civil war where the south seceded. The EU and Russia are divided at the moment, and they are becoming more polarized to each other, as they approach each other’s dominions. The EU wishes to strength its group, while adding more countries to its ranks, and decreasing the power of Russia. Russia sees their advances on its former territories and “President Putin saw this new step of westernization occurring in the redefined "Eastern Europe" as an "assault" against Russian strategic interests and decided to combat the process of rapprochement between these states and the European Union” (Naumescu). Russia is getting weaker as oil prices drop, and as they lose their interests to the west, but as they use violence and no diplomacy to act on their own selfish needs, the international community or NATO will get involved. The hostile annexing of Crimea is still not recognized internationally. Both nations would be deeply hurt, for example Ukraine would not have its main sea port, and some major cities, the economy would die along with its people. Russia would get more territory and power, but the EU and other nations would treat them harshly with sanctions, and a war could start.
