Civilized Society In Chinua Achebe's Things Fall Apart

A civilized society is hard to define due to the cause of uniqueness around the world and the diversity between societies. What makes one society civilized may be in contrast to another society 's beliefs, which makes determining a civilized society a difficult task. By definition, a civilized society is one that has been brought to a stage of social, cultural, and moral development and is considered to be more advanced. In the novel, Things Fall Apart, Achebe writes the story to portray the Ibo society as a civilized society in many aspects of life including government, religion, and societal roles. To begin, the Ibo society is civilized in many aspects of its culture, including the government, including the organization of men in the clan. This event lead to the crier calling the men together into the marketplace to come up with a solution to this incident. when Achebe writes, “an ultimatum was immediately dispatched to Mbaino asking them to choose between war on the one hand, and on the other the offer of a young man and a virgin as compensation”(11), a the conclusion became clear. This quote helps the reader to understand that the society is civilized because the government did not directly want to go into combat. Instead, they also proposed a civilized way to restore peace between the two tribes to ensure the safety of the members. Also, the gathering of all the men shows that the society is civilized because there is social order in the community and structure that goes into the decision making process. Furthermore, in later chapters of the book British refugees invade Umofia, and the men meet again to determine what actions should be taken to regain control of their society. As read in the book,
