Southwest During 1967 a gentleman who went by the name of Rollin King formed what we know as Southwest Airlines. This airlines began offering flights in Texas from Houston to Dallas, San Antonio to Dallas and vice versa. Other airlines such as Braniff International Airways and Texas International Airlines did not offer these short flights. In order to fly to Houston or Dallas someone would have to board a flight that is already coming from another state and exit when it landed. Mr. King’s idea was to offer flights to these customers at a lower fare and less hassle style. These customers could board one of Southwest’s flights in Dallas and fly straight to Houston with no stops in between. In 1970 King brought onboard Lamar Muse and appointed …show more content…
Other airlines around the nation began to slash prices in an effort to gain customers back and increase their revenue. These airlines also offered free items, and cheap sodas on the same routes that Southwest was flying along with more frequent flights. Braniff even went as far as offering half-price flights for which Muse matched and added free bottles of premium liquor to the passengers that were willing to pay full price. This attracted the business men as they liked receiving the free bottles of liquor so Southwest became the winner of the fare wars. From this point on Southwest consistently made a profit. Muse stayed with Southwest until he retired in 1977 for which Herb Kelleher to his place. Much of their history can be seen in the pictures and mannequins that are dressed in the uniforms that were worn over the years. Kelleher considers each one of his employees as a family member and it shows when they have their yearly banquet. Kelleher would be visit with employees from all levels of the company, even calling them by name. Kelleher also believed in customer satisfaction and even spent time reading many letters from them. All of this helped Southwest become successful and stay successful, but there are always other ways to do the same
