The city of Southfield, MI has requested that a new charter high school is created that would represent the diversity within the city. Southfield currently has eleven private schools, five universities, and seventeen public schools (Market Research Services Oakland County Planning and Economic Development, n.d.) Hagwon’s are private tutoring academies that are attended before and after school. Students start their school day at eight in the morning and end their school day by attending the Hagwons until eleven at night (Ripley, 2014, p. 56). Ripley states that the job of the mother in South Korea is “train those kids, to push them, and even bench them to prove a point” (Ripley, 2014, p. 106). South Korean parent involvement in their children’s education is to be admired and even be added as part of the new charter school
