Southern Gothic Genre

American Literature was shaped in part by the traditions of the Southern Gothic Genre. Southern
Gothic literature has many of the same aspects as Gothic literature. It focuses on many topics such as death, madness, and the supernatural in addition to many mystical, violent, and grotesque aspects. Traits of this genre include Race/Class/ Social Structure, Unrequited love,
Good Versus Evil, Being an outsider, and Violence. In class, we learned about three important
Short stories including Possibility of Evil, A Good Man is Hard to Find, and A Rose for Emily. All three of these stories portray the traits of Southern Gothic. This essay will explain how each of these short stories classify into the different traits of the Southern Gothic genre.

The first trait is Social Structure, ¨The tax notice was also enclosed, without comment.¨ ¨I have no taxes in
Jefferson.¨ Miss Emily felt since she had never paid taxes then she should not have to pay them now. Mrs. Emily is refusing to pay taxes because of her class. They wanted her to pay her taxes, but she had never had taxes because her father gave the town money. The next trait is being an outsider, Homer Barron is a Yankee from up north who comes to the South and he doesn't quite fit in very well. . Faulkner demonstrates in ¨ A Rose for Emily¨ when she lay in bed beside Homerś dead body, ¨ Then noticed that the second pillow was the indentation of a head...¨ This demonstrates how Miss Emily laid there with his body which is Disturbed personality. Miss Emily father also isolated her from guys and that's why she the way she was wither Homer because he wasn't fully committed to her so she thought of killing which also illustrates Disturbed
